SCREAM 7 (2026): David Arquette To Reprise His Role as Dewey in Forthcoming Horror Sequel

David Arquette Returns to Scream Franchise

In an interesting development, David Arquette will return to the Scream series once again even after having been killed off in a previous Scream film.

We don’t have all the answers as to how David Arquette will be returning as Deputy Dewey Riley in Scream 7 but it is actually happening contrary to what audiences had expected. Paramount Pictures’ latest upcoming scarefest, Scream 7, could have the tagline from the 1999 film The Sixth Sense: ” I see dead people.” That’s because the new Scream picture has cast several people who have been bumped off in previous installments, including Scott Foley, Matthew Lillard and, most recently, series veteran David Arquette.

While the plot of Scream 7 is pretty much top secret at this point, director Kevin Williamson promises to reinvent the series with this latest installment in the franchise. Interestingly enough, Deadline pointed out that Mikey Madison, the recent Oscar winner for Anora, played the character who gave Arquette’s Dewey the ax. The recent Deadline article also points out that Dewey was Rose McGowan’s character’s brother.

Of course, FilmBook has previously reported that Neve Campbell and Courteney Cox will be returning for the new Scream picture as well. This cast reunion has piqued the curiosity of Scream fans all over the world and the news of Arquette’s return to the franchise after his previous demise has people scratching their heads in wonder as to how the filmmakers will make his character a part of the story line again. Could it be through flashbacks? Could Arquette be playing his role in scenes from the past? There’s a good possibility that could be the case here.

David Arquette was also married to star Courteney Cox for almost 14 years dating back to 1999. Since they’re working together again in these Scream pictures, it’s safe to say that there’s probably no hard feelings between them. In fact, who knows if Cox influenced Williamson’s decision to re-cast Arquette again?

Besides the Scream movies, Arquette is also known for his work in the Drew Barrymore comedy, Never Been Kissed, and middling Hollywood movies like Ready to Rumble, Eight Legged Freaks and See Spot Run. Arquette’s easy going charisma and energy helped put him on the map as a comic actor. However, Dewey may be one of Arquette’s biggest claims to fame and it will be great to see him re-play his character in Scream 7 which is due out in 2026. Other prominent performers in the seventh film in the Scream series include Mckenna Grace and Mark Consuelos. There’s no denying that the paying movie-going public will be plunking down their cash mostly to see Campbell, Cox and Arquette back in action again.
