SISTER ACT 3: Whoopi Goldberg Hopes to Make Long-Awaited Sequel Happen

Whoopi Goldberg Sister Act Back In The Habit

Whoopi Goldberg is Eager to Do 3rd Sister Act Film

Whoopi Goldberg has expressed that the 3rd Sister Act film is still hopefully going to happen as a movie for Disney Plus.

Never say never. As cliched as that expression may sound, Bette Midler recently made a sequel to the initial box-office disappointment, Hocus Pocus, from 1993 almost thirty years later. That film is already slated to soon be appearing on Disney Plus. Similarly, Whoopi Goldberg’s Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit was somewhat of a box-office disappointment especially if you compare it to the first film in the series’ domestic grosses. The first Sister Act from 1992 made almost $140 million but the sequel earned just $57 million. Now, though. with almost 30 years in passing from the release of the second film, Goldberg has confirmed the possibility of the third movie in her comedy movie series actually happening.

Appearing on Whoopi Goldberg’s television talk show, “The View,” recently was none other than Jenifer Lewis. Goldberg and Lewis revealed they are equally excited at the prospect of the third movie actually coming into fruition. Lewis appeared in both Sister Act films. She also helped Goldberg find her singing voice for the roles in both of the aforementioned comedy movies. It seems like this project is something both would love to see happen and it certainly could and should happen.

While the details of the plot of the upcoming movie are still being kept under wraps, Tyler Perry has been reported via online sources to be a potential producer of the 3rd Sister Act movie alongside Goldberg, herself. This is a project that would certainly appeal to Goldberg fans since the actress was in the prime of her career when the first film was released. Goldberg was just coming off winning an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress in 1991 for her work in 1990’s acclaimed box-office hit, Ghost.

Sister Act received a coveted “A” CinemaScore grade back in 1992 while the 1993 sequel (which was kind of rushed out to theaters, to be honest) earned a still respectable “A-.” There was no indication that fans were tired of the material judging from the grade the second movie received but the disappointing box-office returns of the second movie helped put thoughts of a third film to rest. However, now, the third film seems like a definite possibility.

Whoopi Goldberg would return to the limelight with decent results if a 3rd Sister Act film actually did get made. As a woman hiding out as a nun in the original movie, the first picture provided audiences with terrific crowd-pleasing laughs. While a 3rd movie in the series may initially seem like a little bit of a case of too little, too late, crowds who fondly remember the first two movies would enjoy seeing Goldberg up to her old tricks playing a part that helped make her a big box-office draw as a standalone actress.
