SOMEWHERE OUT THERE: Searchlight Takes Worldwide Rights to New Film from Director Alexander Payne

Alexander Payne On Set

Searchlight to Re-Team with Director Alexander Payne

Rights to filmmaker Alexander Payne‘s latest, Somewhere Out There, have been snatched up by Searchlight Pictures, a studio which has worked with the director in the past.

Sideways and 2011’s The Descendants director, Alexander Payne’s new film featuring Renate Reinsve (The Worst Person in the World) is titled Somewhere Out There. Searchlight Pictures has just bought the worldwide rights to the upcoming movie save for the Nordics where distribution will be done by Scanbox Entertainment. While the story line of the Danish language production helmed by Payne has not been made clear yet, the film promises to be one of Payne’s best yet and it is in good company at Searchlight with the films the studio has released from Payne in the past: the Oscar-winning (for Best Screenplay) pictures, Sideways and The Descendants.

Somewhere Out There is going to be the director’s first European film and is expected to be both moving and funny. Payne’s last film, The Holdovers, received Oscar nominations for both the picture itself and two of its stars. Paul Giamatti was the lead in that film and the actor won numerous accolades for his performance in that particular picture. Da’Vine Joy Randolph garnered Best Supporting Actress awards from various branches as well for her own performance in the film, including top honors from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.

Renate Reinsve was featured in the acclaimed 2024 movie, A Different Man, and the actress usually takes on brave roles in daring and ambitious films. Somewhere Out There feels like it could be Oscar-bait in so many ways. Renate Reinsve is overdue for an Oscar nomination and recently starred in Armand. Sideways and the George Clooney The Descendants movie, which Payne both directed, were Oscar favorites and were nominated for Best Picture in the respective years in which they came out.

Searchlight (formerly known as Fox Searchlight) is a division of 20th Century Fox (Disney) that released awards caliber films such as Little Miss Sunshine and The Tree of Life under their old umbrella. The old studio and the new one are known for their aggressive marketing campaigns that usually yield either significant box-office returns or multiple award nominations for the studio’s pictures. Nightmare Alley and the Bob Dylan biopic, A Complete Unknown, are recent examples of the current studio’s success stories.

Alexander Payne’s name on a film is never to be taken lightly. He scored much success with another one of his films from the early 2010’s called Nebraska and although his 2017 effort, Downsizing, wasn’t a hit, it earned points for its daring premise and solid performances from Matt Damon and Hong Chau. With the exception of that 2017 movie, Payne’s films are usually virtually guaranteed to be hits on the art house circuit and beyond. The same is likely to be said for Somewhere Out There when it is eventually released.
