THE LONGEST YARD: A Remake of Adam Sandler’s 2005 Film is Starting to Develop at Paramount

Adam Sandler Plus Co The Longest Yard

Another Version of The Longest Yard in the Works

A remake of the 1974 film The Longest Yard and its 2005 remake, also called The Longest Yard, is moving its way through early production stages at Paramount.

Burt Reynolds starred in two versions of the football comedy/drama, The Longest Yard, and the now deceased actor’s roles will soon be recast for the next filmed remake of the crowd-pleasing story. Coming from writer Rodney Barnes and Paramount Pictures will be yet another version of the football movie. It’s hard to believe 18 years have passed since the smash hit 2005 version which starred Adam Sandler, Chris Rock, Nelly and Reynolds. That film was the type of stand up and cheer movie that audiences tend to love going to see.

The fun sports movie from 2005 earned an astonishing $158 million at the domestic box-office cementing the appeal of the story behind the film which was made back in 1974 as well. The 2005 picture received a fine grade of “A-” from CinemaScore audiences which proves this story of prison guards versus inmates is timeless movie material.

Stories of underdogs are always appreciated by movie audiences looking for easy viewing. The appeal of seeing some screw-ups defeat the odds to hold their own on the football field is tremendous and it’s simple to see that if the casting will be done correctly then another hit movie will surface based on this wildly popular material.

Reynolds passed away in 2018. He was once one of our most accomplished mainstream actors and, surprisingly, he almost won an Oscar for playing a role in a different type of movie than the ones audiences were used to seeing him in– that Oscar would have been for Boogie Nights had Reynolds not lost to Robin Williams for Good Will Hunting. Reynolds made both The Longest Yard films tons of fun for viewers.

It would be interesting to see Sandler carry the torch to the next set of actors who will be starring in the latest version of The Longest Yard. Perhaps, Sandler could do something similar to what Reynolds did and play in the upcoming remake. The casting of the upcoming project will be pivotal to seeing it succeed at the box-office.

Rodney Barnes has several television credits (such as “Everybody Hates Chris”) and writing the new film will be an interesting process. The big question mark regarding the next remake is whether it will have the stamina to play on the big screen or simply stream on Paramount Plus. Something tells me Paramount has big screen aspirations for the next version of The Longest Yard. Keep your eyes open for future details regarding the development of this project.
