THE MARVELS (2023): Upcoming Marvel Film’s Price Tag is Way More Than a Conservative $130 Million

Brie Larson The Marvels

The Marvels is One of the Costliest Recent Marvel Movies

The latest upcoming film from Marvel will be The Marvels and will feature Brie Larson in one of the least conservatively budgeted films in the studio’s recent history.

So, Oscar-winner Brie Larson (Room) is coming back to theaters soon with her heroic Captain Marvel character in the appropriately titled, The Marvels. This film, with a price tag of at least $220 million is not going to be the cheapest Marvel movie in years. Reports had said it was, perhaps, Marvel’s cheapest since 2015’s original Ant-Man at $130 million. Not true.

In the movie, directed by Nia DaCosta, Larson’s character will team up with her niece (who is an astronaut played by Teyonah Parris) as well as the intriguing character Kamala Khan (Iman Vellani). With this unlikely group putting their strengths together, the world will have to be saved and it will be up to them to make sure civilization is preserved for the greater good.

The good news about The Marvels is that if the film is a hit (and that’s a big “if,” considering the budget), there will be several spin-off ideas for projects based on the material found in this movie. Avengers and Secret Wars projects may just want to take some of the ideas found in The Marvels and play off of them for more terrific MCU projects.

In some more good news for The Marvels, the film will be able to excel at the box-office in IMAX theaters. As long as reviews and word of mouth on the film are good, ticket sales will be boosted significantly by the IMAX prints. Dune: Part Two moving its release date to March 2024 helped free up those IMAX screens.

Samuel L. Jackson will be back in The Marvels as well, re-playing his role as Nick Fury. This film will be released on November 10th and will have a couple of weeks before Thanksgiving to rake in some cash at the box-office. But, with a budget of $220 million, the movie could open with just $75 million domestically and not be considered a hit unless it has some sort of box-office legs that will keep it swimming at the box-office through to at least Thanksgiving weekend.

The Marvels is opening close to the time of the year when Eternals flopped back in 2021. History hopefully won’t repeat itself. With a lack of competition until the unveiling of the almost three-hours long The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, The Marvels has two weeks pretty much all to itself to try to recoup as much of that $220 million budget as possible. As Rob Schneider might tell Captain Marvel, “You can do it!” Maybe. The Marvels could come close to making half its budget back by the time Thanksgiving rolls around. Long term box-office prospects are iffy at this point, though.
