THE PRINCESS DIARIES 3: Anne Hathaway Set to Return For Upcoming Sequel to Be Directed by Adele Lim

Anne Hathaway to Return for Third Film in Popular Franchise

Anne Hathaway will be coming back in The Princess Diaries 3 some 20 years after the second film in the series slightly under-performed at the box-office.

Anne Hathaway will be back on screen as Mia in another installment of The Princess Diaries. Garry Marshall, the director of the previous The Princess Diaries films, sadly passed away in 2016 so a new director, Adele Lim, has been appointed to take over the franchise. It’s only appropriate that a woman director takes over the material since times have changed a bit over the past 20 years which was when the last film came out.

A great soundtrack will be essential for the new movie because 2004’s The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement had tunes on its track that included the likes of Kelly Clarkson’s “Breakaway” and Lindsay Lohan’s “I Decide.” The new picture may have to be slightly better received by critics, though, considering the 2004 movie currently stands with a rotten 26% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. The first film is a little better in terms of its rating on the RT website with a 49% approval rating from critics. Audiences loved both films with the first earning an “A” CInemaScore and the second movie securing an “A-.”

Lim (writer of the script for Crazy Rich Asians) is known for her work on last year’s raunchy comedy, Joy Ride, which makes the choice of having her helm the latest film in the family-friendly franchise a surprise to many. Lim is more than capable of making a funny movie but she probably won’t be able to use vulgar words in her movie this time out. Lim has a very distinct film-making style that made her 2023 film a delight for people who were much older than most of the targeted audience for The Princess Diaries 3.

As of now, Julie Andrews’ involvement in the new project is a bit up in the air in terms of it being definitive although her name is on the IMDb site as a star of the third The Princess Diaries movie. Andrews once stated that she wasn’t quite sure where she would fit into the third picture in the franchise.

Academy Award winner Hathaway has made a diverse slew of projects over the last few years but none have quite lived up to the golden standards she set with her Oscar-winning turn in Les Miserables. Hathaway still did fine work in movies like Armageddon Time and The Idea of You, nevertheless. Look for more details regarding the forthcoming The Princess Diaries sequel as they become available to us. Note to the filmmakers: Make the soundtrack as great as it was in the last one, please!
