THE PRINCESS DIARIES 3: The Third Installment of Disney Movie Series is Finally in the Works

A New Princess Diaries Movie Could Happen

It has been reported that a script for the third The Princess Diaries film is now being written for Disney.

It’s not a reboot but rather a sequel. The moderately successful Princess Diaries franchise came to an abrupt halt in 2004 when The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement under-performed a bit at the domestic box-office. Now, after the passage of almost two decades, a third film in the series is now officially in the works for Disney. Set mostly in a small European place of royalty called Genovia, Anne Hathaway played Mia in the previous pictures. Mia learned that she was a princess and tried to make her dreams come true as a new princess with hysterical results.

Now deceased romantic comedy director Garry Marshall (Pretty Woman) directed the two previous The Princess Diaries movies. The second film in the Princess Diaries series had a terrific soundtrack which featured some of the most memorable music hits of the year the film came out. “Breakaway” by Kelly Clarkson and “I Decide” by Lindsay Lohan were the two most popular new (at the time) songs on the soundtrack.

Both of the previous films also starred the legendary Julie Andrews, The first movie from 2001 made $108 million at the domestic box-office. The 2004 sequel only earned $95 million, though, in the U.S. and Canada. Hathaway is not yet tied to the third upcoming movie in the franchise. It would be nice, however, if she would make an appearance in the film which she has given her support to. It is going to be written by Aadrita Mukerji.

A third movie in this series could be just what Disney needs to make some major box-office dollars on the family-themed movie circuit unless, of course, the studio decides to release it on Disney Plus which may also be a possibility given the studio’s latest trends when it comes to releasing sequels to movies that some may consider past their prime.

Since The Princess Diaries movies, Hathaway has become an Oscar-winning actress and earned the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for 2012’s Les Miserables. It would certainly be nice to see Julie Andrews come back on board the family film franchise for a last hurrah in the third Princess Diaries.

Garry Marshall had made several holiday themed romantic comedy movies after the success of The Princess Diaries and Marshall was known significantly for them. Some of those pictures include the star studded movies, Valentine’s Day and New Year’s Eve.

While it’s anyone’s guess what route Disney will take with the upcoming sequel, it’s clear that there will be plenty of fans who fondly remember the older pictures in the series. With any luck, Andrews and/or Hathaway will reappear in the next The Princess Diaries even if it’s just in cameos.
