Hugh Jackman Feels His New Role Was a Must to Play

Hugh Jackman is going to be in one of his most dramatic roles ever in a film coming out this fall, The Son, which is the prequel to 2020’s The Father.

You saw The Father for which Anthony Hopkins scored a Best Actor Academy Award. Now, witness The Son starring the always phenomenal Australian actor/heartthrob Hugh Jackman. He truly is “the greatest showman” just like the role he played in a huge box-office smash hit movie musical called–that’s right-The Greatest Showman. At this year’s Venice International Film Festival, a truly moved and satisfied audience gave a 10-minute standing ovation to The Son which hints that it is going to pack an emotional wallop for many mainstream audiences when it comes to theaters this November.

Jackman believes the new movie shows how “isolated” people can get, especially when considering mental health issues. The actor wants the new film to initiate conversations and prove that people should “never worry alone.” More importantly, however, Jackman had that kind of sinking feeling that he “must” play the role which he does in the movie. It is going to be his most heartfelt performance to date if the Venice response to the film is an accurate indication.

The Son is adapted from a play penned by Florian Zeller and Christopher Hampton. It marks a chance for Jackman to shine in a role that is unique for the gifted and versatile actor. Also starring in the movie are heavy hitters Vanessa Kirby, Anthony Hopkins and Laura Dern.

Although playing Wolverine in the X-Men pictures and Logan was his initial claim to fame, in 2017, Jackman found a whole new family film audience in the movie world with his much-adored musical, The Greatest Showman. That picture earned an astonishing $174 million at the domestic box-office despite a rather slow opening weekend. Word of mouth spread like wildfire on that film, and it became one of the most successful film musicals of all-time. It received a coveted “A” CinemaScore grade from audiences.

Jackman was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actor for his role in 2012’s hit, Les Miserables, which made $148 million at the domestic box-office and scored the always intriguing Anne Hathaway a Best Supporting Actress Oscar. Some people in Hollywood think Jackman could get nominated again for his heartfelt performance in The Son. Only time will tell.

The Father proved to be a genuinely moving picture when it was released. It was a picture which left audiences spellbound thanks to the quality of the performances and the genuine emotions that were expressed in that movie. With Jackman in top form, all eyes are on The Son, and some are expecting potential award nods in categories other than acting, although an acting nomination is well within Jackman’s reach.
