Mekhi Phifer Joins High-Profile Cast Members in Forthcoming Film

The always versatile Mekhi Phifer has been added to the cast of a movie soon to be made by Searchlight titled, The Supremes at Earl’s All-You-Can-Eat.

Mekhi Phifer has been one of the most prolific actors of his generation in both television and film roles throughout his distinguished career. While he is best known for the close to seven years he spent on the television drama, “E.R.”, he also has quietly carved out a film career for himself which pretty much started with his first major successful role in a box-office hit from 1997, Soul Food. That film launched him into the limelight and, soon, he not only appeared in Universal’s 2002 box-office hit, 8 Mile, Phifer was also showcased in a line of the song in that film, “Lose Yourself,” which was sung by the film’s star, Eminem.

In the cast of The Supremes at Earl’s All-You-Can-Eat are some heavy-hitters, for sure. Uzo Aduba (“Orange is the New Black”), Aunjanue Ellis (Oscar nominee for King Richard) and Sanaa Lathan (so good in Love & Basketball) have also been slated to appear in this very intriguing film that is in the works. This film will be made for Searchlight Pictures and is to be directed by filmmaker Tina Mabry who stunned the movie world when she made her first feature film, Mississippi Damned in 2009. The Supremes at Earl’s All-You-Can-Eat also has a script which has been written by the great Gina Prince-Bythewood whose new movie, The Woman King is currently heating up the box-office.

Phifer has also made other films that are quite noteworthy. In 1995, he appeared in the central role of Spike Lee’s Clockers which under-performed at the box-office but was definitely a meaty role for the actor who was emerging at the time that movie was released. That part led to his presence in the star-studded box-office smash, Soul Food. That movie earned an “A+” CinemaScore grade. Phifer also appeared in the science fiction action picture, Divergent, as well which was a marginal box-office success. That film spawned two film sequels which Phifer was also a part of.

This upcoming Phifer movie is based on a 2013 book by Edward Kelsey Moore. It’s a movie that has a story line about friendship and it analyzes the bond between family members which is tested by life’s day-to-day endeavors. The Supremes at Earl’s All-You-Can-Eat is certainly the type of star-studded affair which could be the segue into the second half of Phifer’s extraordinary career. Remember Phifer has been around in the film acting biz for a long time and his time to shine in terms of movie award recognition could soon be upon us with this fascinating new picture.
