Tom Cruise Slated to Appear in Oscar Winner Alejandro G. Iñárritu’s Latest Film

Tom Cruise Set to Work with Alejandro G. Iñárritu

Tom Cruise has decided to work with Oscar-winning film director, Alejandro G. Iñárritu, on the acclaimed filmmaker, Iñárritu‘s next project.

Tom Cruise is long overdue for an Oscar (or at least another Academy Award nomination). Between the late 1980’s and late 1990’s, the actor collected a total of three nods from the Academy. Working with Alejandro G. Iñárritu helped score other high-profile actors like Michael Keaton and Leonardo DiCaprio Academy Award nods for Best Actor (hey, DiCaprio even won for The Revenant). It could be Cruise’s turn to shine under Iñárritu’s capable guidance.

This upcoming project from Iñárritu is in negotiations with Warner Bros. and Legendary Entertainment for acquisition. Little is known publicly of the film’s plot at this particular point in time, however. Cruise recently signed a contract with Warner Bros. and is looking to work on more prestige projects since spending a great deal of time on the Mission: Impossible films and the recent second Top Gun movie.

Working with the likes of Oliver Stone, Cameron Crowe and Paul Thomas Anderson helped Cruise secure Oscar nominations for the films, Born on the Fourth of July, Jerry Maguire and Magnolia, respectively. Alejandro G. Iñárritu has shaped the talents of some of Hollywood’s heaviest hitters, Brad Pitt (in 2006’s Babel), Keaton (in Birdman or The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance) and DiCaprio (in The Revenant).

While it has been some 24 years since Cruise was nominated for his acting at an Academy Awards ceremony, working with Iñárritu will, at the bare minimum, prepare Cruise for more challenging dramatic roles. Cruise has been used to physically demanding parts in action movies and his new film will once again test his abilities as a dramatic actor. Cruise was, perhaps, at his most interesting when he played in the late, great Stanley Kubrick drama movie, Eyes Wide Shut.

Alejandro G. Iñárritu’s most recent big project was a non-English language Netflix Oscars bait film, Bardo, False Chronicle of a Handful of Truths. It was well-received despite the fact that it didn’t get too many award nods from the major film branches. Still, with his English language movies, Iñárritu has been a director to be reckoned with and has made one artistically challenging film after another with sensational results.

In other news, Cruise was recently reported to be toying with appearing in a sequel to 2014’s Edge of Tomorrow called Live Die Repeat and Repeat. So, the actor would probably still be in major box-office draws alongside the more challenging artistic endeavors such as the new project he has taken on with Iñárritu. All eyes will most certainly be on Cruise’s performance in the upcoming Iñárritu picture. Cruise is long overdue for an Academy Award win and Iñárritu could make it happen.
