Tom Cruise Slated to Earn the 52nd AFI Life Achievement Award in 2027

Tom Cruise to Be Honored by the American Film Institute
Tom Cruise is scheduled to receive the 52nd AFI Life Achievement Award on April 24, 2027 at the Dolby Theatre in L.A. for his excellent body of terrific film performances.
There’s no denying Tom Cruise’s excellence as an actor even though a debate is currently on whether his last role in Digger was truly one of his best parts. Yet, one of his big scenes in that new film proved that Cruise can really act up a storm when the situation calls for it. Cruise is deservedly being named the recipient of the 52nd American Film Institute Life Achievement Award.
Cruise was deemed a “global icon” by Kathleen Kennedy, the chair of the Board of Trustees over at AFI. Joining the ranks of Denzel Washington, Nicole Kidman, George Clooney and, most recently, Eddie Murphy, Cruise is in some stellar company with past recipients of the prestigious honor.
Tom Cruise had been nominated for three Academy Awards. His first nomination came for his work in the hard-hitting 1989 Vietnam film, Born on the Fourth of July. He lost the Oscar to Daniel Day-Lewis. He was nominated for Best Actor again for Jerry Maguire, a 1996 drama, but lost to Geoffrey Rush. In 1999’s Magnolia, Cruise gave one of his best performances ever in the dark film, but he ultimately lost to Michael Caine. Some think Cruise could be nominated for his fourth acting Oscar for Digger, but given the poor box-office receipts and tepid reviews the film was met with, it seems like a long-shot at this particular point in time.
Cruise isn’t only a great actor, he’s a formidable action movie hero. Having excelled in franchises like Top Gun and Mission: Impossible, Cruise proved he could do action, comedy and drama with great ease. Although comedy wasn’t really his forte, he managed to crank out some funny movies early on in his career, such as Risky Business, where the actor danced in his underwear on-screen. He also did humorous work in the wacky Tropic Thunder.
While Tom Cruise is still in the running for an Oscar for Digger, this prestigious honor bestowed upon Cruise by the American Film Institute is a good prize for the actor to receive next year, especially given the physical challenges he faced playing his role in Digger. It helps cover Cruise for accolades, just in case the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences snubs him for that controversial recent role. Even if he gets nominated, he probably won’t win the Oscar in 2027.
Cruise is, quite simply, a living legend. His work has earned him much praise, and the box-office receipts for his films were typically excellent, even when he made movies that got bad reviews like Cocktail. Since Cruise didn’t look like Cruise in Digger, that was a rare exception to his successful box-office trajectory.
