Sequel To Twins Still a “Go” Despite Loss of Beloved Director

Arnold Schwarzenegger has confirmed that the sequel to 1988’s Twins, Triplets, will move ahead even though its planned director recently passed away.

When the director of the original Twins, Ivan Reitman, died this past February, the future of one of his greatly anticipated projects, Triplets, was put into question. Arnold Schwarzenegger has stated that the movie will still happen. A new director is going to be searched for and the comedy will move forward as planned if a filmmaker is found. However, if nobody fits the bill to helm the sequel, it may not make it to the screen.

Reitman, who also made the original Ghostbusters, is not a talent who would be deemed easy to replace by any measure. He was a one-of-a-kind filmmaker who had a distinct style and a flair for comedy that few directors in today’s Hollywood possess.

Triplets has seen other problems in its attempts to be brought to fruition. The third sibling (the triplet) in the potential sequel had originally been set to be played by Eddie Murphy. However, Murphy backed out and Tracy Morgan was brought in as the long-lost brother of the characters played by Schwarzenegger and DeVito.

While one hopes that Schwarzenegger, DeVito and Morgan can make a “go” of this project, many people are concerned of the possibility that, without Reitman, the project simply wouldn’t work as well. That is why it is imperative to find the right man (or woman) for the director’s chair for Triplets which is obviously easier said than done.

It is wildly debatable that this project simply took too long to get off the ground. The original was released in 1988 and 34 years is a really long time to wait for a follow up movie. Even the passing of Kelly Preston who played in the original film is a potential sign that this material is past its prime.

With that being said, if anyone can make us laugh it’s DeVito who has built a career on comical roles that are sometimes associated with his short height. Schwarzenegger has always had a flair for comedy even though his funny movies haven’t exactly scored well with the critics. Jingle All the Way, anyone? That film stands at a terrible 20% Rotten Tomatoes approval score although Schwarzenegger’s collaboration with former director Reitman, Kindergarten Cop, fared somewhat better and currently holds a 51% approval rating. Still, audiences haven’t really been knocking down the door for a Schwarzenegger comedy since the original Twins.

While it would be quite nice to see the pair of movie stars (Schwarzenegger and DeVito) reunite, the absence of Reitman means that a strong comic director must be found to save the fate of Triplets. I, for one, was hoping to see Reitman direct the movie which was originally set to shoot in Boston earlier this year. We shall see what fate has in store for Triplets though it seems Schwarzenegger is determined to make it happen.
