VERITY: Dakota Johnson Comes Aboard Forthcoming Colleen Hoover Film Adaptation

Dakota Johnson To Star in Verity

Dakota Johnson of 50 Shades of Gray will appear in a leading role in the upcoming film adaptation of a book by Colleen Hoover, Verity.

Anne Hathaway will play a best-selling author named Verity Crawford in Amazon MGM’s Verity which features the story of what happens when Hathaway’s character’s husband, Jeremy (to be played by Josh Hartnett), gets involved after Verity abruptly seems to disappear from the spotlight. A woman named Lowen Ashleigh is asked to step in to help with completing some of the author’s heavy writing. Dakota Johnson is going to be playing Lowen in the film who is a struggling writer. Johnson was recently seen in the compelling taxi-cab drama, Daddio, where she played opposite Oscar-winner Sean Penn. Michael Showalter has been tapped to direct the forthcoming picture which, as stated, is an adaptation of a novel from Colleen Hoover.

While Hoover’s last film adaptation, It Ends with Us, has been at the center of controversy these days regarding Blake Lively’s interaction with Justin Baldoni, the film’s star and director, that drama was a huge box-office success. Verity has the same type of complexity to its story line that was found in It Ends with Us which was mostly well-regarded by mainstream audiences.

The complexity in the story for Verity lies in the fact that the writings of the character of Verity have underlying meanings which Johnson’s Lowen may just unveil. The tagline for the film suggests that Hathaway’s character may have a lot of talent or a lot of emotional problems. People who have read the book, Verity, know the answer but the film could still have a trick or two up its sleeve.

Anne Hathaway never ceases to amaze with the roles she takes on these days while Josh Hartnett just recently made the surprising M. Night Shyamalan thriller, Trap, which was released this past summer. It is Dakota Johnson who is the most valuable player in the cast, though. She has the most to gain by being in a film of this magnitude given her recent financial failure, Madame Web. Unfortunately, Daddio didn’t set the big screen ablaze in terms of box-office receipts either so Verity is the high-profile movie Johnson needs to rejuvenate her career which could use a kind of 50 Shades of Gray-type of hit.

Michael Showalter and Anne Hathaway recently collaborated on the romantic picture, The Idea of You, which was a big hit for Amazon MGM. They look likely to duplicate that film’s success with Verity and with Hartnett and Johnson on board, you can expect it won’t end with their casting and that the picture will go on to be a huge success. Especially with Hoover’s name stamped all over it.
