VERONA SPIES: Emma Roberts Slated to Appear in Upcoming Comedy Movie

Emma Roberts Close Up

Emma Roberts Cast in New Comedic Role

Emma Roberts has been selected as the female lead for the forthcoming new spy comedy titled, Verona Spies.

Early on in Emma Roberts’ career, the actress was known best as Julia Roberts’ niece. As the years have passed, Emma has come into her own as an actress securing roles in so many hit movies and television shows, it’s hard to keep track of them all. Horror and comedy are typically her forte in terms of genres so it’s no surprise that she will be appearing in an upcoming picture which has the markings of a hilarious movie with its offbeat story line. It’s about a woman named Verona who gets entangled in a story of mistaken identity when she accidentally gets hired as an escort that will also serve as an assassin. Verona is given the initiative to steal a pharmaceutical executive’s formula for a new drug.

While Emma Roberts has just been cast in the aforementioned new upcoming action/comedy film from director Frank Coraci (The Wedding Singer), Verona Spies, the most interesting news about the project is that she will be appearing opposite screen veteran/Oscar winner Geoffrey Rush in the movie. Rush will be portraying the head of the pharmaceutical company whose employee with the new drug teams up and falls in love with Verona.

Emma Roberts is known best for her work on television’s gruesome but hugely successful, “American Horror Story.” She was in Scream 4 and she also appeared in the film adaptation of Ned Vizzini’s acclaimed book, It’s Kind of a Funny Story. Roberts initially came on to the movie scene with her performances in teen movies Aquamarine and Nancy Drew back in 2006 and 2007, respectively. It would be nice for Verona Spies to be a Hollywood blockbuster, however, to officially cement Roberts’ status as the kind of box-office draw her aunt, Julia Roberts, was and still is. Emma Roberts was recently cast in Madame Web which seems like a sure-fire success as well given its ties to the Spider-Man series.

Geoffrey Rush won the Academy Award for Best Actor for his work in 1996’s dramatic film, Shine. He is best known to mainstream audiences for his work in the Pirates of the Caribbean movies where he played opposite Johnny Depp. Rush has always had an odd kind of art house movie appeal, though, since he appeared in many big iconic movies of that type during the course of his career (see: Oscar winning movies Shakespeare in Love and The King’s Speech).

Verona Spies is said to be a comic adventure picture in the vein of 1993’s action-packed True Romance. This forthcoming film’s director, Coraci, is best known for making Adam Sandler movies which were undeniably big box-office draws such as The Waterboy and Click. Emma Roberts may just solidify her place in Hollywood as the “it” girl of quirky American movies with Verona Spies while Rush will most likely secure his place in Hollywood as the type of character actor audiences will not be able to take their eyes off.
