Costner’s Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 1 Will Be Lengthy

The first part of Kevin Costner‘s long-awaited Western, Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 1, will likely clock in at three hours in length.

Kevin Costner is returning to the West for the theme of his latest motion pictures. The acclaimed actor/director won the Academy Award for Best Director for his 1990 masterpiece, Dances With Wolves, and now, is going to be coming back to making the type of movies that suit him well as a talent. The epic length of the first part of his new sprawling film series has been announced. Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 1 will most likely be three hours long. Releasing on June 28th, the first part is going to be one of the first big official movies of the summer. The second chapter will be released on August 16th. This will give people time to absorb the complexity (and length) of the first part.

Costner has been making long movies for years. JFK from 1991 ran almost 3 and a 1/2 hours. Over the years, Costner had to trim down his movies to normal length as everything he makes couldn’t test viewer’s patience. Still, a good chunk of Costner’s filmography as an actor has been films which have ran at least two hours long. Even films like Message in a Bottle and For Love of the Game were two-hour plus. Costner can’t afford for his Civil War dramas, the Horizon films, to end up like his three-hour financial disaster, The Postman from 1997.

Who can forget when The Postman came out almost 27 years ago and proved Costner isn’t going to duplicate the success of Dances With Wolves every time? Hopefully, he’s learned his lesson and his newest projects will live up to the expectations Costner has been setting lately, especially with his solid work on the TV show, “Yellowstone.” Costner was also in Man of Steel and Zack Snyder’s Justice League and has earned his stripes as an actor in “blockbusters” but will his latest work as a film director avoid the fates of both The Postman and Wyatt Earp before it? Hopefully, yes.

Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 1 has a cast that is chock full of intriguing character actors such as Sienna Miller, Sam Worthington, Luke Wilson, Jena Malone, Giovanni Ribisi and Isabelle Fuhrman. Though Christopher Nolan’s lengthy star-studded Oppenheimer made a splash at the Oscars, Costner’s new epics are less of a sure thing in that particular regard. Costner would be lucky to achieve box-office success with his Horizon films but Oscar nods other than technical ones will probably not be on the “horizon” for these films unless Costner really worked his magic in such a way that he could duplicate the success of Dances With Wolves. We shall see soon in what way Costner’s new works will factor in to his career highlights and if they will boost his popularity again at the box-office.
