Top Gun: Maverick revealed by Tom Cruise to be Top Gun Sequel Title
Tom Cruise revealed the official title of the Top Gun sequel to be Top Gun: Maverick today on Access Hollywood. In the sequel, Tom Cruise will be reprising his role as United States Naval Aviator Pete Mitchell. Pete Mitchell’s former rank of Lieutenant (from 1986) will most-likely be upgraded in Top Gun: Maverick.
The Maverick portion of the Top Gun 2 title is a direct reference to Pete Mitchell U.S. Naval Aviator call-sign from the first Top Gun film.
Top Gun‘s original director, Tony Scott, committed suicide in 2012 and the development of the sequel film stalled as a result. Top Gun: Maverick is now back on track and its producers are currently looking for a director. The current front runner for the director’s chair is Oblivion and TRON: Legacy director Joseph Kosinski.
Regardless of the director or the cinematographer for Top Gun: Maverick, Tom Cruise assures fans of the original film that Top Gun 2 with have the look and feel of Top Gun:
“We’re gonna have the same tone we had from the first one, really.” “Stylistically, it’s going to be the same. We’re going to have the same score from Harold Faltermeyer…Aviators are back. The need for speed. We’re going to have big, fast machines…[in a] competition film”
The plot of Top Gun: Maverick is beginning kept under wraps. Jerry Bruckheimer, however, dropped the hint that Top Gun 2 could be about the obsolescence of air craft combat pilots in the era of unmanned drones.
The original Top Gun film also starred Kelly McGillis, Val Kilmer, Anthony Edwards, Tom Skerritt, Michael Ironside, John Stockwell, Barry Tubb, Rick Rossovich, Tim Robbins, Clarence Gilyard Jr., Whip Hubley, James Tolkan, Meg Ryan, and Adrian Pasdar.
