A New Reboot of CHARLIE'S ANGELS is in Development

A New Charlie’s Angels Movie is on the Horizon

Sony is developing a new Charlie’s Angels film which will feature the characters from the original 1976-premiering TV show and the later movies that it inspired.

A third Charlie’s Angels McG movie was supposed to be a possibility as we reported about three years ago. However, now there is likely to be a whole new re-imagining of the Charlie’s Angels property over at Sony that is going to be penned by Pete Chiarelli (Goat, Now You See Me 2).

In 1976, the series, Charlie’s Angels, premiered which starred Farrah Fawcett, Kate Jackson and Jaclyn Smith. Cheryl Ladd joined the cast for the second season. In 2000, Lucy Liu, Cameron Diaz and Drew Barrymore played the title characters in a box-office hit that spawned a sequel just a few years later. Sadly, in 2019, another cinematic reboot of the franchise that starred Kristen Stewart, Ella Balinska and Naomi Scott was almost DOA at the box-office.

However, with the 50th anniversary of the old TV show coming up, it seems that now is as good a time as ever to come up with a new cast to play the infamous Charlie and his secret weapons, his angels, who are detectives by trade. Expect an intensive search for the right talent to make this new reimagining of the old TV series a successful one.

In 2000, Charlie’s Angels had many of the ingredients that audiences loved and people showed up in droves to see it. One of those elements was a hit song by Destiny’s Child which was tied into the film and led to a popular soundtrack for the box-office smash. It isn’t clear why the third McG Charlie’s Angels project got scrapped, but perhaps, at least one of the 2000’s films’ stars decided not to come back. If that isn’t the reason, maybe Sony just wants to start from scratch and rebuild the property from the bottom up.

Charlie’s Angels had a key male character named Bosley showcased in it which was played by Bill Murray in the 2000 picture. In the 2019 film, Elizabeth Banks took a different route with her being one version of Bosley out of several different variations of the character (including one played by Patrick Stewart). I hadn’t initially seen the 2019 movie because of its box-office failure although now that Kristen Stewart had launched a very prestigious career as a dramatic filmmaker and actress, it might be interesting for fans of the series (and of Stewart) to look at the 2019 film in retrospect.

Sony most likely plans to make the new Charlie’s Angels one for the record books. Keep your eyes open for more news on this exciting project as developments continue to unfold. Everything will mostly depend on the casting choices and the marketing of the newest film version of this immensely intriguing property which has had mixed results over the decades.
