Cameron Diaz Set to Reboot 1989 Shelley Long Vehicle TROOP BEVERLY HILLS with a “Requel”
Upcoming Sequel to Late 80’s Comedy Film in the Works
Cameron Diaz is slated to be producing and possibly starring in a requel to the critically trashed 1989 box-office bomb, Troop Beverly Hills, over at Tri-Star Pictures.
In March 1989, Troop Beverly Hills was released in theaters. A comedy movie about a troop of Girl Scouts that just made about $8 million total back then, the film’s critical scores weren’t good either and the film sits with a just under 15% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. For some reason, the movie has found a solid fan base over the past three and half decades or so on video, streaming, cable and whatever other methods people use to seek out old movies.
Troop Beverly Hills starred Shelley Long of television’s Cheers fame as the troop leader in the old movie. A ditzy, but secretly smart, woman who helped her Girl Scout troop in the film thrive, Long gave a humorous performance which certainly had its admirers despite the movie’s failure to fully captivate critics.
While Cameron Diaz is definitely producing the comic requel, she will potentially also star in the new project, according to sources. This film is neither a sequel or a reboot, but rather a “requel” as it combines elements of both a follow-up movie and something different. Most of this film’s audience will either be little girls or older women who remember Long and will want to see Diaz take over the beloved part that has won accolades by fans of kids’movies.
In 1989, Troop Beverly Hills secured just a mediocre “B” CinemaScore grade. With that kind of low mark, a sequel was never thought to be likely…until now. Shelley Long might get to do a walk-on in the upcoming movie, but the premise of the film should help the lead role go to Cameron Diaz who was almost nominated for an Oscar after getting many accolades for her dramatic work in 2001’s Vanilla Sky.
Diaz may handle the themes found in the new picture finely. However, just how big a part Long, herself, will have in the new sequel/reboot is yet to be determined. Tri-Star and Sony are trying to make the new Troop Beverly Hills garner the financial success that Diaz’s remake of the hit musical, Annie, had back in 2014.
The first Troop Beverly Hills picture recently found a bigger following than the little attention the movie had achieved when it was initially released. Tri-Star is probably hoping Diaz can prove herself again as a funny woman after finally getting the genres straight again and knowing what types of roles suit her best. With movies like one called The Mask, a comic book adaptation, Diaz has gotten very comfortable in Hollywood films and she likes to bring the requisite star power to the lead roles she usually finds herself immersed in. Clea DuVall will be penning the script and helming the new movie as well.
