Beetlejuice Sequel Selected to Open the Venice Film Festival

Michael Keaton’s long-awaited return to the screen as the character Beetlejuice will be celebrated as the new sequel, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, opens the Venice International Film Festival.

Tim Burton’s new sequel, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, is set to kick off the 81st Venice Film Festival. The film is set to have its world premiere on August 28th at the Sala Grande. While the news of the new movie starting off the festival is unexpected, the revelation that the film will be playing out of competition is not surprising. Burton is a legendary filmmaker and his latest creative endeavor is still certain to be met with anticipation by Venice audiences.

Beetlejuice Beetlejuice will release internationally on September 4th with its domestic release date set for just two days later on September 6th. Last we remember, Keaton reported that he was happy with the early cut of the forthcoming sequel which has been in the works for some time now. The original picture from Warner Bros. opened all the way back in 1988. There is a great cast attached to the sequel which includes newcomers and return cast members from the first movie. Catherine O’Hara and Winona Ryder are among those returning stars from the 1988 picture while Monica Bellucci, Willem Dafoe and Jenna Ortega top the list of newcomers to the series.

Burton already holds a Golden Lion in Career Achievement from Venice that he received back in 2007. He is a master filmmaker who specializes in the obscure and presented the films Corpse Bride and The Nightmare Before Christmas at previous festivals. This year’s presentation of Beetlejuice Beetlejuice should receive a lengthy standing ovation if the film is as original and wild as the recent trailers for it suggest it will be.

Sigourney Weaver and director Peter Weir will be receiving Golden Lions this year at the Venice Film Festival. Peter Weir is an extraordinary filmmaker who made a picture for Warner Bros. in 1993 called Fearless which featured some of the best work of renowned actor Jeff Bridges’ career. Weaver is, of course, the star of Ghostbusters and Aliens as well as independent gems like The Ice Storm.

Beetlejuice Beetlejuice is going to get a nice boost at the box-office thanks to its high-profile world premiere at Venice although it was already almost certain that the film would open well given the long time audiences have been waiting for its arrival. Expect an opening upwards of $40 million on September 6th although that number could go up or down as tracking seems to change week-to-week on upcoming movies. At this point, the buzz is strong on the latest Burton/Keaton collaboration. Warner Bros. is hoping for a hit with M. Night Shyamalan’s Trap early next month before they focus almost entirely on helping make Beetlejuice Beetlejuice take the top spot at the box-office on September 6th.
