The theatrical movie box office results for May 5, 2023 through May 7, 2023 have been released.

The Box Office

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3 premiered in the Number One spot at the United States box office over the weekend with $114 Million so far. Worldwide, the film has made over $282.1 Million.

The Super Mario Bros. Movie was Second at the box office over the weekend with $18.6 Million (a 54% drop from last weekend) for $518.1 Million so far. Worldwide, the film has made over $1.159 Billion.

Evil Dead Rise was Third at the box office with $5.7 Million so far.

Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret was Fourth at the box office with $3.3 Million so far.

Love Again premiered in Fifth Place at the United States box office with $2.4 Million.

These films: John Wick: Chapter 4, Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves, AIR, Guy Ritchie’s The Covenant, and Sisu rounded out the top ten respectively.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is a 2023 American superhero film based on the Marvel Comics superhero team Guardians of the Galaxy, produced by Marvel Studios, and distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures. It is the final installment in the Guardians of the Galaxy film trilogy, the sequel to Guardians of the Galaxy (2014) and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 (2017), and the 32nd film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).

The film was written and directed by James Gunn, and features an ensemble cast including Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Karen Gillan, Pom Klementieff, Vin Diesel, Bradley Cooper, Will Poulter, Sean Gunn, Chukwudi Iwuji, Linda Cardellini, Nathan Fillion, and Sylvester Stallone. In the film, the Guardians embark on a mission to protect Rocket (Cooper) from the High Evolutionary (Iwuji).

Love Again is a 2023 American romantic comedy-drama film written and directed by James C. Strouse. It is an English-language remake of the 2016 German film SMS für Dich, itself based on a novel by Sofie Cramer. The film stars Priyanka Chopra Jonas, Sam Heughan, and Celine Dion, in her first film role, portraying a fictionalized version of herself.

“A box office or ticket office is a place where tickets are sold to the public for admission to an event. Patrons may perform the transaction at a countertop, through a hole in a wall or window, or at a wicket.

By extension, the term is frequently used, especially in the context of the film industry, as a metonym for the amount of business a particular production, such as a film or theatre show, receives. The term is also used to refer to a ticket office at an arena or a stadium.

Box office business can be measured in the terms of the number of tickets sold or the amount of money raised by ticket sales (revenue). The projection and analysis of these earnings is greatly important for the creative industries and often a source of interest for fans. This is predominant in the Hollywood movie industry.

To determine if a movie made a profit, it is not correct to directly compare the box office gross with the production budget, because the movie theater keeps nearly half of the gross on average. The split varies from movie to movie, and the percentage for the distributor is generally higher in early weeks.

Usually the distributor gets a percentage of the revenue after first deducting a “house allowance” or “house nut”. It is also common that the distributor gets either a percentage of the gross revenue, or a higher percentage of the revenue after deducting the nut, whichever is larger.
