Movies That Opened This Weekend

The films in the Top Ten that opened this weekend at the box office:

Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret. is a 2023 American coming-of-age period comedy drama film produced, written for the screen, and directed by Kelly Fremon Craig, based on the 1970 novel of the same name by Judy Blume. The film stars Abby Ryder Fortson as the title character of Margaret Simon, along with Rachel McAdams, Elle Graham, Benny Safdie, and Kathy Bates.

Ponniyin Selvan: II (transl. The Son of Ponni), also known and marketed as PS-2 and stylised as Ponniyin Selvan 2, is a 2023 Indian Tamil-language epic historical action adventure film directed by Mani Ratnam, who co-wrote it with Elango Kumaravel and B. Jeyamohan. The film is produced by Mani Ratnam and Subaskaran Allirajah under Madras Talkies and Lyca Productions. The second of two cinematic parts based on the 1954 novel Ponniyin Selvan by Kalki Krishnamurthy, it serves as a direct sequel to Ponniyin Selvan: I (2022). The film stars an ensemble cast including Vikram, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Jayam Ravi, Karthi, Trisha, R. Sarathkumar, Jayaram, Prabhu, Aishwarya Lekshmi, Sobhita Dhulipala, Vikram Prabhu, Prakash Raj, Rahman and R. Parthiban.

Ponniyin Selvan continues to follow the prince Arunmozhi Varman (who would become the emperor Rajaraja I) and his family as they deal with threats to the Chola dynasty. It was originally intended to be a single film but was split into two parts that were produced concurrently. Joint principal photography of both parts began in December 2019, halting twice due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Extra sequences filmed for the sequel were wrapped up in March 2023. The soundtrack was composed by A. R. Rahman, with cinematography by Ravi Varman, editing by A. Sreekar Prasad, and production design by Thota Tharani.

Sisu is a 2022 historical action film written and directed by Jalmari Helander. Set in Finnish Lapland during World War II, the film follows a gold prospector who attempts to secure his gold and defend himself from a Nazi death squad led by a brutal Schutzstaffel officer. The film stars Jorma Tommila, Aksel Hennie, Jack Doolan and Mimosa Willamo.

Originally, Helander was supposed to work on the sci-fi comedy Jerry and Ms. Universe as his next project after Big Game, but the COVID-19 pandemic changed Helander’s plan and he moved on to make Sisu. The film was shot in 2021 near the Nuorgam village in Lapland with a budget of about €6 million. According to Helander, the 1982 American action film First Blood and the real-life Finnish military sniper Simo Häyhä served as great inspirations for the film.

The History of Box Office (and Profit Measurement)

“A box office or ticket office is a place where tickets are sold to the public for admission to an event. Patrons may perform the transaction at a countertop, through a hole in a wall or window, or at a wicket.

By extension, the term is frequently used, especially in the context of the film industry, as a metonym for the amount of business a particular production, such as a film or theatre show, receives. The term is also used to refer to a ticket office at an arena or a stadium.

Box office business can be measured in the terms of the number of tickets sold or the amount of money raised by ticket sales (revenue). The projection and analysis of these earnings is greatly important for the creative industries and often a source of interest for fans. This is predominant in the Hollywood movie industry.

To determine if a movie made a profit, it is not correct to directly compare the box office gross with the production budget, because the movie theater keeps nearly half of the gross on average. The split varies from movie to movie, and the percentage for the distributor is generally higher in early weeks.

Usually the distributor gets a percentage of the revenue after first deducting a “house allowance” or “house nut”. It is also common that the distributor gets either a percentage of the gross revenue, or a higher percentage of the revenue after deducting the nut, whichever is larger. The distributor’s share of the box office gross is often referred to as the “distributor rentals”, especially for box office reporting of older films.”
