Movies That Opened This Weekend

The films in the Top Ten that opened this weekend at the box office:

The Pope’s Exorcist is a 2023 American supernatural horror film directed by Julius Avery from a screenplay by Michael Petroni and Evan Spiliotopoulos, based on the 1990 book An Exorcist Tells His Story and the 1992 book An Exorcist: More Stories by Father Gabriele Amorth. The film stars Russell Crowe as Amorth. It also stars Daniel Zovatto, Alex Essoe, and Franco Nero.

Production began in 2020 when Screen Gems bought the rights to Amorth’s story. After a directorial replacement and script revisions, filming took place from August to October 2022 in Ireland.

Renfield is a 2023 American comedy horror film directed and produced by Chris McKay, and written by Ryan Ridley from a story by Robert Kirkman, who also served as co-producer. Inspired by characters from the 1897 novel Dracula by Bram Stoker, it is a direct sequel to the 1931 film of the same name. The film stars Nicholas Hoult, Awkwafina, Ben Schwartz, Adrian Martinez, Shohreh Aghdashloo, and Nicolas Cage as Count Dracula.

Suzume (Hepburn: Suzume no Tojimari, lit. “Suzume’s Locking Up”) is a 2022 Japanese animated fantasy adventure film written and directed by Makoto Shinkai, produced by CoMix Wave Films, and distributed by Toho. The film follows 17-year-old high school student Suzume Iwato and university student Sota Munakata, who team up to prevent a series of disasters across Japan.

The film features the voices of Nanoka Hara and Hokuto Matsumura, with the character designs by Masayoshi Tanaka, animation direction by Kenichi Tsuchiya, art direction by Takumi Tanji, and music by Radwimps and Kazuma Jinnouchi; Suzume is Shinkai’s third collaboration with Radwimps and Tanaka, after Your Name (2016) and Weathering with You (2019), and was inspired by the Tohoku earthquake and tsunami. The film began its production in early 2020, eventually being announced as completed by October 2022. A novel adaptation, also written by Shinkai, and a manga series illustrated by Denki Amashima both debuted prior to the film’s release.

Mafia Mamma is a 2023 American action comedy film directed by Catherine Hardwicke, from a screenplay by Michael J. Feldman and Debbie Jhoon, and based on an original story by Amanda Sthers. It stars Toni Collette as an American woman who travels to Italy following the death of her grandfather, who she finds out was a mafia Don. Monica Bellucci and Sophia Nomvete also star.

Nefarious is a 2023 American drama film. Nefarious’ plot synopsis: “On the day of his scheduled execution, a convicted serial killer gets a psychiatric evaluation during which he claims he is a demon, and further claims that before their time is over, the psychiatrist will commit three murders of his own.”

The History of Box Office (and Profit Measurement)

“A box office or ticket office is a place where tickets are sold to the public for admission to an event. Patrons may perform the transaction at a countertop, through a hole in a wall or window, or at a wicket.

By extension, the term is frequently used, especially in the context of the film industry, as a metonym for the amount of business a particular production, such as a film or theatre show, receives. The term is also used to refer to a ticket office at an arena or a stadium.

Box office business can be measured in the terms of the number of tickets sold or the amount of money raised by ticket sales (revenue). The projection and analysis of these earnings is greatly important for the creative industries and often a source of interest for fans. This is predominant in the Hollywood movie industry.

To determine if a movie made a profit, it is not correct to directly compare the box office gross with the production budget, because the movie theater keeps nearly half of the gross on average. The split varies from movie to movie, and the percentage for the distributor is generally higher in early weeks.

Usually the distributor gets a percentage of the revenue after first deducting a “house allowance” or “house nut”. It is also common that the distributor gets either a percentage of the gross revenue, or a higher percentage of the revenue after deducting the nut, whichever is larger. The distributor’s share of the box office gross is often referred to as the “distributor rentals”, especially for box office reporting of older films.”
