Eddie Murphy Comedy Will Be Heading to Amazon

Eddie Murphy has a new upcoming holiday comedy titled Candy Cane Lane which will premiere on Amazon Prime Video.

One of America’s “kings of comedy,” Eddie Murphy, will be featured in a new film from Amazon Prime Video, Candy Cane Lane. It is part of a three-picture deal for the hysterical “Saturday Night Live” genius who is coming off the successful sequel, Coming 2 America, which was a long time in the making and did not disappoint streaming audiences at all. It didn’t score the best reviews, weighing in with just a 49% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, but was just what the doctor ordered for light viewing during the pandemic.

Reginald Hudlin will be directing Murphy in the forthcoming new comic movie. Playwright Kelly Younger penned a spec script about youthful holiday experiences which is the basis for Candy Cane Lane. According to sources, this film will start its production in Los Angeles this winter. Fans are hoping it is going to be one of Murphy’s more successful pictures given his recent comeback with the enormously watched, fan loved hit Coming 2 America which even got an Academy Award nomination for Best Makeup and Hairstyling. This is a superb accomplishment for a movie that isn’t typical Oscar-worthy fare otherwise. It’s undeniable that it’s makeup and hairstyling rose above what was expected to create some fun scenes of comedy that had to be seen to be believed.

Eddie Murphy has had his fair share of comedy flops such as Imagine That and A Thousand Words, but those days of being a disappointment to his fans seem to be long behind Murphy. The latter picture came out about 10 years ago! It’s water under the bridge for sure. Hudlin directed Murphy in the 1992 romantic comedy Boomerang and that movie was one of Murphy’s more distinguished dramatic comedies that won over people who thought Murphy couldn’t succeed as a more serious actor. This collaboration of Murphy and Hudlin will undoubtedly keep expectations high on the upcoming comedy.

Eddie Murphy has had a career with some ups and downs but his voice-over work as the donkey from the Shrek films always kept him afloat even when some of his live-action work faltered. An Oscar nomination for his terrific supporting turn in Dreamgirls also kept him going strong. Even when Murphy has done wrong, we’ve forgiven him. A funny movie about the holidays could be just what streaming audiences ordered.

Younger had previously penned the recent Muppets Haunted Mansion which, like a 2003 Murphy film called The Haunted Mansion, was about a haunted house. Murphy has always been an actor who, when given the right material, can make it leap off the screen. Especially the right comic material. Let’s hope the combination of Younger, Hudlin and Murphy can make magic with the holiday-themed comedy, Candy Cane Lane!
