Cillian Murphy Bests Bradley Cooper for Best Actor at the Globes

In what appears to be an Oppenheimer sweep tonight at the Golden Globes, Cillian Murphy took home the coveted Best Actor (Drama) trophy.

Bradley Cooper was sensational as Leonard Bernstein in the deeply moving Netflix film, Maestro, but Cooper probably stood very little chance of besting Cillian Murphy’s triumphant, overwhelming dramatic performance in Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer. A Golden Globe victory for Murphy has just happened tonight which will make it difficult for Cooper to best Murphy come Oscar time. While they’re both most likely going to be in competition for SAG and Academy Awards, Murphy has been given the edge thanks to his win tonight.

It wasn’t just this Murphy vs. Cooper competition which was a big category tonight. In the Best Actress (Musical or Comedy) category, there were two heavy-hitters who were fighting for a win– Margot Robbie (Barbie) and Emma Stone (Poor Things). Stone emerged triumphant and took home the victory from the Hollywood Foreign Press for her comedic performance in Poor Things over Robbie’s in Barbie. While Stone is most likely going to make SAG and the Academy Awards’ list as a Best Actress nominee, Robbie may have to put up a bit of a fight to make the final list for Best Actress given some very strong female performances at the movies this year. It’s still anyone’s guess if Robbie has what it takes to make the cut for SAG and the Oscars.

Christopher Nolan won Best Director tonight at the Golden Globes which came as no surprise since he’s been deemed a front runner for this award ever since the project of Oppenheimer was conceived, let alone filmed. Nolan gave a big shout out to Best Supporting Actor winner for the film, Robert Downey Jr. at the ceremony.

While Oppenheimer is on track to a sweep at the Golden Globes tonight, it did manage to lose out to Barbie in the Cinematic and Box-Office Achievement category. This is where Barbie deserved to win given its huge box-office performance which Meryl Streep recently claimed truly saved jobs in Hollywood.

As the night continues, it looks likely that Oppenheimer will secure the win for Best Picture (Drama) and Poor Things will win Best Picture (Comedy or Musical). Though these wins have not been secured at the publication time of this article, many insiders deem it a “no-brainer” that these films will win their respective categories. We shall see as the night goes on. The big race to keep an eye on tonight, though, is Paul Giamatti (The Holdovers) vs. Jeffrey Wright (American Fiction) for Best Actor (Comedy or Musical).
