OPPENHEIMER Takes Home Top Prizes At the SAG Awards

Florence Pugh Cillian Murphy Oppenheimer

Oppenheimer Cleans Up at the SAG Awards

Oppenheimer took the prizes for Best Actor (Cillian Murphy) and Best Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture while it was a surprise of a Best Actress win for Lily Gladstone (Killers of the Flower Moon) at the Screen Actors Guild awards.

Lily Gladstone was always the favorite for me to win Best Actress for her riveting turn in Killers of the Flower Moon but some Emma Stone (Poor Things) award wins steered some predictions away from Gladstone. However, it was never much of a contest regarding Oppenheimer. Christopher Nolan’s epic film won the Best Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture award. Cillian Murphy also won the Best Actor in a Motion Picture award which makes the Best Actor race look more like his to win than his competitor Paul Giamatti (The Holdovers)’s.

The Best Supporting Actor winner was Robert Downey Jr. for Oppenheimer. Downey Jr. also managed to add his typical charisma to his award speech as he personally thanked his wife for presenting herself as happy throughout their entire marriage. Da’Vine Joy Randolph (The Holdovers) delivered a wonderful speech after her win was announced for Best Supporting Actress. She gave hope for aspiring performers and suggested that things can change for an artist at any given moment. She gave the advice to never give up. This was certainly the actress’s best acceptance speech yet.

Gladstone and Murphy were huge surprises tonight to many. There were two tight races for Best Actor and Best Actress although some had gone in thinking Murphy would take home the award. Many were shocked when Gladstone won given Emma Stone’s previous wins at other ceremonies.

A heavily-bearded Kenneth Branagh accepted the award on behalf of the cast of Oppenheimer. Surprisingly, Florence Pugh wasn’t on stage as one of the cast members who came on to the stage to celebrate the movie’s win. Branagh talked about how lucky and humble the cast members were to be in Oppenheimer.

The legendary Barbra Streisand took a Lifetime award at the ceremony. She touched the audience with a moving speech. It was great to see a tribute that showed all her terrific film work. Clips of underappreciated movies like Nuts, The Prince of Tides and The Mirror Has Two Faces were shown as examples of her superb work.

This SAG ceremony shapes up the Oscar race pretty well. Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One won tonight for Best Stunt Ensemble sharpening its chances at technical awards glory. It looks like Oppenheimer will sweep the Oscars, though, if the events of tonight’s show are any indication of what’s to come. If there’s any doubt as to how the awards will shape up, we’ll have our answers on Oscar night, March 10th. Look closely at that race between Giamatti and Murphy for Best Actor because anything can happen!
