Lily Gladstone Secures Oscar Front-Runner Status with Golden Globe Win

Lily Gladstone won the Golden Globe for Best Actress for her turn in Martin Scorsese‘s Killers of the Flower Moon positioning herself as an Oscar front-runner.

Lily Gladstone represented Martin Scorsese’s long, but powerful, dramatic film, Killers of the Flower Moon, with a Golden Globe win for Best Actress. This came in a competitive category and stood as the sole win for Scorsese’s picture tonight which lost most of its other categories to Oppenheimer.

Paul Giamatti (The Holdovers) bested Jeffrey Wright (American Fiction) for Best Comedic Actor tonight in the final decision by the Globes for Best Actor in a comedy or musical.

Oprah Winfrey presented the Best Dramatic Picture award to Oppenheimer. As the film that represented the best of motion pictures of 2023, Oppenheimer went out with a bang, earning quite a few wins tonight. Emma Thomas, the producer, of Oppenheimer, accepted the Golden Globe for Best Picture (Drama).

At this point, it looks like Best Actress will be a race between Gladstone and Emma Stone who won Best Actress (Comedy or Musical) for Poor Things which won Best Picture (Comedy or Musical) tonight.

It was a good ceremony tonight in terms of the nature of the films which were honored with Golden Globe wins. Surprisingly, Anatomy of a Fall won Best International Film. Since the film will have to make it into the Best Picture category itself to be honored at the Academy Awards, that would mean it would probably be nominated alongside The Zone of Interest which would lead to two Best Picture contenders which were also international movies.

The Boy and the Heron took Best Animated Feature Film at the Globes tonight which surprised many given that the box-office mega-hit, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, was also in competition for the award.

Finally, Lily Gladstone represents a picture which was very urgent in the year of cinema. Had it not been about three and a half hours long, it may have bested Oppenheimer, but that lengthy running time ultimately doesn’t lessen the importance of the film that is Killers of the Flower Moon.

Oppenheimer may be Christopher Nolan’s reason to shine tonight but Killers of the Flower Moon was Lily Gladstone’s finest moment. She will hopefully be honored at the Academy Awards with a win, but Emma Stone does pose a fierce threat at the current time. As the race proceeds until Oscar time, check out Gladstone and Stone’s performances in their respective films before the Oscars ceremony which is about two months away right now.
