David Gordon Green’s NUTCRACKERS Slated to Open This Year’s Toronto Film Festival

Nutcrackers Kicking Off Toronto Film Festival
This year’s 49th Toronto International Film Festival will start with the showing of the new Ben Stiller film, Nutcrackers.
This year’s Toronto Film Festival’s opening and closing selections have been decided. Director David Gordon Green’s dramatic comedy, Nutcrackers, will open the festival on September 5th while the directorial debut of Rebel Wilson, The Deb, will close the event.
Nutcrackers will premiere at Roy Thomson Hall and will have a nice-sized audience to appreciate the sophisticated humor of the film’s star, Ben Stiller, who has been missing in action at the movies for more than half a decade. It should be a welcome return to form for Stiller although knowing director Green’s work, the film is likely to be anything but your run-of-the-mill dramatic comedy.
In the film, Stiller plays Mike who goes to Ohio to take care of his four nephews after the death of their parents in a car accident. Linda Cardellini and Edi Patterson co-star in the movie which will certainly tug at the heartstrings while making audiences laugh.
The Australian set The Deb will close out the festival. That film is about a Debutante Ball that a high school girl named Taylah (Natalie Abbott) finds could be her ticket to happiness. This movie is Rebel Wilson’s first feature as a director. The film has been an uphill battle to get made and it’s to Wilson’s credit that the production was selected as the closing feature of TIFF.
Another movie screening at the Toronto festival will be Nightbitch which is having its world premiere. It stars Amy Adams. Many are expecting an Oscar-nomination worthy turn from Adams in the long-awaited dramatic film. Ron Howard’s latest, Eden, will also be screening at the event.
While Nutcrackers and The Deb are surely going to be crowd favorites, they also mark important milestones for the talent involved. Nutcrackers is Stiller’s first film since 2017 whereas The Deb is the work of a brave female director, Wilson, who has had her own off-screen difficulties. The Pitch Perfect actress is “beyond grateful” to have her film a part of such a prestigious event. The festival will take place from September 5th until the 10th.
Nutcrackers is certainly going to be a conversation starter with its unique premise and what is likely to be a very heartfelt performance by Stiller. Nobody can play humor with just the right amount of complexity that Stiller offers in his roles. The actor has a diverse body of work which includes There’s Something About Mary, Meet the Parents and Night at the Museum. He also has a darker side which was seen in Your Friends & Neighbors. David Gordon Green always has a style all his own which should be on display in his latest offering, Nutcrackers.
