NUTCRACKERS: Ben Stiller Set to Return to the Silver Screen After a Six-Year Absence

Ben Stiller Brads Status

Ben Stiller Jumps Back From TV to Movies Again

Ben Stiller has been cast in a leading role in David Gordon Green‘s upcoming dramatic comedy titled, oddly enough, Nutcrackers.

Ben Stiller was so funny in his cameo in the hysterically funny Bros last year that one can’t help but be delighted at the news that he has been cast in a new forthcoming film titled, Nutcrackers. Of course, most people know Stiller for the role (that inspired his turn in Bros) which the actor played in Night at the Museum and its sequels. His filmography of hits also includes gems like There’s Something About Mary, Dodgeball and Meet the Parents (let’s not mention that film’s inferior sequels). His last film as a lead was 2017’s Brad’s Status, a poor box-office performer that got good reviews but managed just a scant $2 million in domestic returns. No wonder, he turned to television to further his career up until now.

However, Stiller always seemed best suited for the big screen and dramatic roles like his one in Your Friends and Neighbors back in 1998 proved he could really act. Tropic Thunder solidified that he could do things of substance even though his more comic roles were usually just as good as his meatier ones. Stiller also directed movies like Reality Bites and The Cable Guy back in the 1990’s.

David Gordon Green is directing the emotional and comic Ohio-set Nutcrackers which is about a career man named Mike (Stiller) who must go to tend to the needs of his four nephews after the death of their parents in a car accident. Green is a horror film director who is changing genres after his last attempt at scares, The Exorcist: Believer, crashed and burned at the box-office. Green could show a whole new side to him and continue his career outside of the horror genre.

When Ben Stiller takes a role, he usually gets to revel in it. He’s made some really wild movies where’s he’s played the “straight man” like Flirting with Disaster but it is his Meet the Parents film roles and his Night at the Museum movie roles which garnered him the most box-office success. Since Stiller is the only cast member of Nutcrackers who has been announced, it’s hard to tell what kind of result the movie will have at the box-office or with critics.

From the sound of it, there should be some interesting character actors peppered into Stiller and Green’s upcoming project and who they are could determine the ultimate success of the project. There’s no doubt that Stiller could carry a movie still and it was great seeing him in Bros last year, but more needs to be revealed about Nutcrackers to guess its ultimate fate.
