Doug Liman is Directing Tom Cruise’s Outer Space Film

Doug Liman has been hired to direct Tom Cruise in a film that will be partially, or in whole, filmed in outer space. Liman is producing the film, along with Cruise. Liman wrote the first draft for the current screenplay.

The untitled film will be a collaboration between Cruise, Liman, their production companies, NASA, and Elon Musk‘s SpaceX.

No other cast members have been announced, besides Cruise.

The film could even evolve the International Space station as it is literally the only viable structure in space for filming to take place on, besides a space shuttle and the Moon (they are not going to Moon…I don’t think).

The logistics of shutting a film in space are monsters – not only will all of the actors have to train like astronauts before they are allowed in space, so will the film crew that goes into space as well. That is six months of training on their space suits, their space craft, etc. On top of that you have all of the film equipment that has to be hauled into space, situated, tested, etc.

Because of all of these extra costs, the budget for this film with be monstrous as well. I hope they are able to workout all of these speed bumps. I also hope they shoot the film entirely with IMAX cameras to capture the full beauty of outer space.
