O’Brien probably didn’t expect to finish his most recent movie Infinite, co-starring Mark Wahlberg, from the comfort of home. But there he was when Variety reporter Marc Malkin showed up, holed up in the den of his house completing some audio re dubbing work.

One of O’Brien’s friends was over when he needed to do some dubbing on a fight scene. His friend listened to him shout, groan, and make choking sounds into a studio delivered recording system. “I have a terrible gag reflex so choking and ADR is always really hard for me, but also I think it’s effective because I really just go for it,” O’Brien said on this Wednesday’s episode of the Variety and iHeartRadio podcast The Big Ticket.

Eight months into the pandemic, O’Brien, who is best known for MTV’s Teen Wolf and the 20th Century Fox‘s Maze Runner franchise, is still stuck at home while promoting his new sci-fi adventure film Love and Monsters. Paramount Pictures described the premise. “Seven years after the Monsterpocalypse, Joel Dawson (Dylan O’Brien), along with the rest of humanity, has been living underground ever since giant creatures took control of the land. After reconnecting over radio with his high school girlfriend Aimee (Jessica Henwick), who is now 80 miles away at a coastal colony, Joel begins to fall for her again. As Joel realizes that there’s nothing left for him underground, he decides against all logic to venture out to Aimee, despite the dangerous monsters that stand in his way.

“When I first read the script, I was like, ‘What the f— is this? This is great!’” O’Brien says. “I really loved it. I loved the humor in it, the characters, the worlds. I thought it was really unique and weird and funky and funny and sweet…and so good-natured.”

The film, directed by Michael Matthews who is known for producing Five Fingers for Marseilles, was originally going to premiere in theaters on Valentine’s Day 2021. However Paramount decided to release it on video on demand on this October 16th.

It wasn’t that long ago when O’Brien thought his career may be done for good. In 2016 he suffered a traumatic injury when he was hit by a stunt car while shooting final film in the Maze Runner franchise. But after several months of recovery and rehabilitation, he went on to finish the film.

O’Brien is now extremely careful about safety on set. “Whenever I’m putting on a rig, I’m vetting every piece of that rig and much more,” he says.

But O’Brien says that no matter how safe he feels, “Even to this day, if I’m on set and I’m doing a stunt, if I’m in a rig, if there’s some action going on, I am slightly irritable. There is a degree of anxiety in me that I don’t think there’s ever not going to be.”
