Oscar Nominated Actress Maria Bakalova is Filming a New Movie

Maria Bakalova is part of the cast of a forthcoming thriller currently shooting in Italy titled Electra.

When Maria Bakalova broke into the movie business with her hugely successful acclaimed role in 2020’s comedy sequel, Borat: Subsequent Moviefilm, it resulted in an Oscar nomination for the actress for Best Supporting Actress. Success for the star didn’t stop there as she was recently featured in one of this past summer’s best horror movies, Bodies Bodies Bodies. That film was a favorite at this year’s Sundance Film Festival as well. Now, Bakalova is starring in an upcoming suspense movie called Electra.

Helmer of the new movie, Hala Matar, will be making her way into directing with this new film Electra being her official directorial debut. She previously cut her teeth on short movies and music videos as well as other previous endeavors. With production already underway in Italy, the new aforementioned picture will star Bakalova as Francesca, the girlfriend of a popular musician named Milo (played by Jack Farthing). Also starring in the movie will be Daryl Wein as a journalist and Abigail Cowen as a photographer. It definitely seems like a cast that will arouse the interest of moviegoers.

Bulgarian actress Bakalova recently made headlines when she was offered a part in the new upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy film. In that film, she is slated to be playing the voice of Cosmo the Dog. Her role, however, as Tutar Sagdiyev in Sacha Baron Cohen’s 2020 Borat mockumentary sequel has been the highlight of her career thus far. It was a part that distinguished her from other actresses, and it proved she could compete with the likes of Glenn Close, Olivia Colman and Amanda Seyfried who were also nominated for the Oscar the same year she was.

In Bodies Bodies Bodies, Bakalova had us questioning her character’s motivations in the movie and the role she played kept audiences in suspense all the way through to the last moments of the film. It was hard to decipher if she was to be trusted or not and it’s to the actress’ credit that the film’s plot could have spun her role any way it wanted to with Bakalova being completely believable in the part any way they could cut it.

While Electra is very much a thriller as well, it will be interesting to see how Bakalova does in her new role and to see if there’s some greater significance to the part she plays in relation to the rest of the characters in the film. Bakalova is certainly quite talented and for her young age, has made a very distinct name for herself in Hollywood at this early point in her career.
