Filmmaker Emerald Fennell Refutes Claim She's Working on a Reboot of BASIC INSTINCT

Emerald Fennell Not Doing a Basic Instinct Reboot

Emerald Fennell and her spokespeople have denied that Fennell is tied to a reboot of 1992’s Basic Instinct despite Joe Eszterhas‘s comments that she was.

Filmmaker Emerald Fennell is coming off a recent box-office success, “Wuthering Heights,” which was significantly steamier than the original film based on the old source material. Despite rumors which circulated that Fennell was going to be directing a reboot of Basic Instinct, Fennell has gone ahead and denied the claim that a reboot will be helmed by the acclaimed Oscar-winner.

Script writer of 1992’s box-office smash, Basic Instinct, Joe Eszterhas, had mentioned that “Brit” director Fennell (Saltburn) was attached to helm a reboot he would be writing, but the “real” truth has arisen that the proposed Amazon film won’t be made under Fennell’s direction any time soon.

Sharon Stone starred in the 1992 movie, Basic Instinct (which starred Michael Douglas who was paired with Stone and the film was a sexy thriller). Evidence has suggested that it’s definitely not going to be Fennell directing the reboot script that Eszterhas has worked on in any way, shape or form. While it would be nice to think a sexy thriller like Basic Instinct would sell if it were made in these conservative times, it probably wouldn’t, even under Fennell’s leadership.

Fennell won much acclaim for her direction of films like Saltburn and the terrific Promising Young Woman from 2020. On the other hand, Eszterhas has previously worked on many flops that faltered at the box-office way back when like Jade and Showgirls. While no really good Basic Instinct reboot could probably be employed to make the movie series overcome some major bad reviews that the second Basic Instinct movie faced, if Fennell tried, things could have been interesting, but she’s alas not interested.

1992’s Basic Instinct was a fun suspense movie about a cop and an affair with a woman who supposedly killed a man or two with an ice pick. You’d have to have not seen the original to really want to see a remake as it was perfectly fine on its own merits at the time of its release and it made significant box-office dollars back then.

Fennell won an Oscar for her intense scripting of Promising Young Woman, and with her latest screen gem “Wuthering Heights” soon exiting theaters, she’s most likely turning to more ambitious projects than a remake of an old sex thriller from 1992. Although it is true that a Basic Instinct reboot could well be in the works, it may fare better as a streaming event than a theatrical one.
