Thoughts on This Week’s In-home Releases
A heavy week for television releases, this week we lead off with my number one pick, Avatar The Last Airbender: The Complete Series, debuting for the first time on Blu-ray. Airing on Nickelodeon last decade, the show has become a classic for its breathtaking animation, epic story, and humorous characters. Avatar boasts some deep messages, and is a show very much rooted in reality, even as it deals in the fantastic.
Also releasing this week is TNT’s The Last Ship: The Complete 4th Season. The show is about the crew of a naval destroyer is forced to confront the reality of a new existence when a pandemic kills off most of the earth’s population. The Last Ship has been a staple for TNT, garnering favorable reviews and solid ratings for a cable show. The fifth and final season will begin airing this summer.
One new release coming to Blu-ray is Gringo. Starring Joel Edgerton, Charlize Theron, and Amanda Seyfried, Gringo joyrides into Mexico, where mild-mannered businessman Harold Soyinka (David Oyelowo) finds himself at the mercy of his back-stabbing business colleagues back home, local drug lords, and a morally conflicted black-ops mercenary. I enjoyed the film, it is always nice to see dark comedy’s as they have become few and far between. The film received mixed reviews from critics, and was a box office disaster, grossing $10 million worldwide.
Also releasing is South Park: The Complete Twenty-First Season on Blu-ray.
