INDIANA JONES AND THE DIAL OF DESTINY (2023): Harrison Ford Gives Up Iconic Film Role After Fifth Installment of Popular Movie Series

Harrison Ford Ready to Hang Up His Hat in Terms of Playing Indy

Harrison Ford will not be reprising the role of Indiana Jones after the fifth installment of the franchise, Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny.

In 1981, Harrison Ford played Indiana Jones in the blockbuster film, Raiders of the Lost Ark. Remember the archaeologist who hated snakes? That was “Indy.” After many years of not playing the character, Ford returned for a fourth time to play the role in 2008’s Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. Now, the actor is back for one last hurrah playing Indy for the last time in Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny which is set to launch into theaters June 30th.

Film producer/head of Lucasfilm, Kathleen Kennedy, stated that the series could go on despite Ford’s departure from the franchise although it would most likely be a television series. It would probably be something for Paramount Plus.

Though Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny looks great from the trailers, it stands at a 50% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes which could hurt the film at the box-office. Though fans of the other pictures won’t be looking too closely at reviews, bad ones could dampen the impact of this new film at the box-office.

Ke Huy Quan who played “Short Round” in 1984’s Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom recently won an Oscar for a supporting turn in Everything Everywhere All at Once. That was the second movie in the series and one of the best entries in the franchise despite the fact it had the lowest box-office gross of the “Indy” films. That film helped introduce the “PG-13” rating because of its violent sequences.

The fourth film, Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, was no slouch at the box-office earning a whopping $317 million domestic gross. If the fifth movie can do at least three quarters of that, it would be a passable box-office gross considering the mediocre reviews of the fifth. Phoebe Waller-Bridge and Antonio Banderas are also playing in the new picture.

While I haven’t seen the new film yet (or read a single review), there could be a reason Indiana Jones is not going to return. When Daniel Craig’s James Bond was promised not to return for another movie, there was a very precise reason in the plot why he was not returning. We shall see if Indiana Jones could meet a similar fate in the latest film.

Though Harrison Ford’s Indiana Jones is not coming back for a sixth film, the franchise could continue through other characters on television. That would be a great way to keep the heart of the Indiana Jones movies alive for the many fans of the franchise.
