JAY KELLY & More Great Movies Make the Cut for AFI’s Top 10 Films of 2025

Jay Kelly Made for a Great Film in 2025, According to AFI

The American Film Institute (AFI) has named their 10 best movies of 2025 and has included Netflix movies such as Jay Kelly and Frankenstein in the mix.

There were a number of surprises this year as the American Film Institute revealed its list of the top 10 movies of 2025. These reveals have, perhaps, helped Jay Kelly the most in terms of its Oscar prospects. That Noah Baumbach film, which features George Clooney and Adam Sandler, is certainly poised to receive some major accolades from the Golden Globes and the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. Bugonia, the wild Emma Stone starrer’s chances have been slightly boosted by the film’s inclusion in AFI’s 10 best list as well.

Some of the usual suspects made AFI’s list, including acclaimed pictures like Sinners, Hamnet, One Battle After Another, Marty Supreme, Frankenstein and Avatar: Fire and Ash. The inclusion of the other two films, Train Dreams and Wicked: For Good, was something of a surprise and now, both film’s Oscar prospects have gotten a small boost. It will take something of a minor miracle, though, for those two movies to make it into the Best Picture race at the Oscars. That’s partly because one of the sure bets to make that race is It Was Just an Accident which earned a special mention award from AFI.

Bugonia has been something of a question mark in terms of whether or not it would make the final cut for Best Picture at the Academy Awards. That film, directed by Yorgos Lanthimos, has that feeling of The Crying Game or The Sixth Sense thanks to its surprise ending and both of those movies made the cuts for Best Picture for the years of their respective releases.

Jay Kelly is an excellent movie and deserves acting nominations for its stars, George Clooney and Adam Sandler. Frankenstein‘s Jacob Elordi is a shoo-in for an acting nomination, himself. Frankenstein from Guillermo del Toro was one of the most exquisitely made movies of the year so it’s no doubt AFI included it. Avatar: Fire and Ash got an incredible reception this week, earning accolades from the National Board of Review as well as AFI.

Sinners and One Battle After Another are the current front runners for the Best Picture Oscar with Marty Supreme the dark-horse candidate to upset either one of those two movies taking home the gold and securing the big prize. Among AFI’s snubs were F1: The Movie and Rental Family which probably don’t stand much of a chance at getting nominated for the big prize at the Oscars although F1: The Movie is bound to receive many technical Academy Award nominations.
