John Malkovich cast in Marvel’s FANTASTIC FOUR: FIRST STEPS

Marvel Studio’s crack at the first family has an all-star cast

John Malkovich has been cast for an as-of-yet secret role in Marvel’s Fantastic Four: First Steps.

The Oscar-nominated actor recently told GQ that he had passed on several Marvel movies due to what he called “low pay”.

“The reason I didn’t do them had nothing to do with any artistic considerations whatsoever. I didn’t like the deals they made, at all,” he said. “These films are quite grueling to make…. If you’re going to hang from a crane in front of a green screen for six months, pay me. You don’t want to pay me, it’s cool, but then I don’t want to do it, because I’d rather be onstage, or be directing a play, or doing something else.”

He does however go on to clarify that, after shooting Fantastic Four, “it’s not that dissimilar to doing theater. “You imagine a bunch of stuff that isn’t there and do your little play.”

While we don’t know which comic book character John Malkovich is playing in this movie, he was originally slated to appear in Sony’s scrapped Spider-Man 4, where director Sam Raimi had cast him as the Vulture, before Sony abandoned it in favor of its reboot, The Amazing Spider-Man (2012). Pedro Pascal will be playing Mr. Fantastic, while Vanessa Kirby will play Sue Storm, the Invisible Girl. Joseph Quinn (Gladiator II) will bring his charm to Johnny Storm, the Human Torch, and Ebon Moss-Bachrach (The Bear) will play the ever-loving Thing.

Fantastic Four: First Steps releases July 23 in theaters, and represents the third attempt at this property being brought to film, not including the canned Roger Corman movie. The first attempt featured two movies, 2005’s Fantastic Four and its sequel, 2007’s Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer, which would be followed by Fantastic Four (2017), which bombed. With Ralph Ineson, the titular Green Knight himself (The Green Knight) being cast as Galactus, here’s to hoping the third time is the charm for these beloved characters.
