LAST EXIT: SPACE: Herzog and Son Team Up on New Space Colonization Documentary

Werner And Rudolph Herzog

Werner Herzog and Rudolph Herzog Team up for Last Exit Space

Werner Herzog and his son Rudolph Herzog will be partnering with production company Gunpowder and Sky to create Last Exit : Space, a new documentary exploring mankind’s push to spread itself into the cosmos with the younger Herzog directing and the elder executive producing and narrating in his characteristically rasping idiolect.

Besides Gunpowder and Sky, production companies Spring Films (known for The Act of Killing) and Taglicht Media (known for Propaganda: The Art of Selling Lies) have agreed to co-produce this film, beginning production this fall. Talent agency ICM Partners negotiated this deal on the behalf of Spring Films, who have produced many documentaries with the Herzog family. Most recently they sold Werner Herzog’s Fireball, an exploration of meteors and other celestial objects, to Apple TV Plus. The film was screened at  the 2020 Toronto International Film Festival.

Last Exit: Space examines how humanity may find a home in one of the hundreds of billions of planets in our galaxy considering Earth’s dwindling resources. “The film will raise the question [of whether] we should really project our hopes into our galaxy, believing that there might be a place out there that might shelter us humans once the resources of the earth have been exhausted,” said Rudolph in a press statement. “I’m looking forward to going on a quest with Werner to find the answer.”

In addition, Gunpowder & Sky has recently announced that they are partnering with Derek Kolstad, creator of John Wick, John Davis of the Predator franchise, and the producer of Sicario, Black Label Media on a feature length time travel film, called Time Agent. Back in August, the company managed to secure worldwide rights to the UFC origins documentary UFC 1: Origins of the Octagon, which is going to be produced by the creative team behind The Last Dance.

Jake Hanly, VP of acquisitions at Gunpowder & Sky stated, “when you get the chance to work with masterful creators like Werner and Rudolph, you take it and thank your lucky stars … Exploring uncharted territory and shedding light on the new and unknown is part of Gunpowder & Sky’s genetic makeup. And, with the Herzogs at the helm, we can hardly wait to invite space enthusiasts and dreamers alike to join us [at] the farthest reaches of the universe.”

As a big fan of science fiction and other stories set in space, I’ll be looking forward to seeing Last Exit: Space when it comes out. If you enjoy science documentaries like Carl Sagan’s Cosmos or NOVA: Science Now like I do, I expect you’ll be pleased with what the Herzog family has to offer in their newest project given the elder Herzog’s use of space as a storytelling device and his great achievements in documentary film-making.
