Sigourney Weaver Slated to Receive Golden Lion

Sigourney Weaver will be receiving the coveted Golden Lion award for lifetime achievement at this year’s Venice International Film Festival.

When the topic of spectacular performances from the 1980’s and 1990’s comes up, one of the names that is most likely always going to be towards the very top of the list is that of the formidable Sigourney Weaver. Now the actress will be recognized with a very prestigious accolade, the Golden Lion, at the 81st Venice Film Festival. Weaver spoke out on the honor and said she is “truly honored” to be awarded this distinction.

In the late 1980’s, she was nominated for both Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress at the Academy Awards in the very same year. One of those nods was for Gorillas in the Mist and the other was for Working Girl. Most people remember that she got nominated a couple of years before that for her lead turn in the science-fiction blockbuster sequel, Aliens. If one of her many great performances was overlooked by the Oscars, though, it may well be her turn in 1997’s Ang Lee masterpiece, The Ice Storm that was the most obvious slight. How the Academy failed to recognize her work in that ensemble drama is one of the greatest mysteries in the history of Oscar snubs though low box-office figures could have been partly to blame.

Of course, Weaver is probably known most by mainstream audiences for her turns in both the Alien and Ghosbusters franchises. Over the years, Weaver has gone back and forth between mainstream projects like those movies and independent dramas like Death and the Maiden from the mid-1990’s and the more recent Paul Schrader film, Master Gardener.

Weaver could play comedy and drama to equal levels of success. She starred with Kevin Kline in the funny 1993 film, Dave, and, just a few years later, appeared opposite Kline in the aforementioned dramatic gem, The Ice Storm. Kline and Weaver worked together again in the 2022 drama, The Good House. Weaver also appeared in Galaxy Quest, a science-fiction comedy from 1999 that starred Tim Allen. Weaver’s resume exemplifies diversity through her work.

When the list of Weaver’s financial successes is broken down, the topic of her work in Jim Cameron’s Avatar films certainly comes up. Weaver also worked with director Cameron in her Oscar-nominated leading actress turn in the Alien sequel from 1986, Aliens.

This recognition at Venice is well-deserved for Weaver whose later work has often been praised, yet ignored by many of the major award circuits. If anything, this upcoming honor can help shed light on Weaver’s brilliant and diverse film career. The Ice Storm remains one of her most hidden gems and is worth seeking out if you have never seen it.
