Red Rocket and Pig Returning to the Big Screen

Sean Baker (Anora)’s terrific under-seen 2021 gem, Red Rocket, will be re-released alongside several other lost films of the COVID era, including Nicolas Cage‘s critical winner, Pig.

There will be a Lost Films of COVID series coming to a few big city theaters that will showcase movies like Oscar-winner Sean Baker’s comedy, Red Rocket, Kelly Reichardt (The Mastermind)’s First Cow, Michael Sarnoski’s Pig and Natalie Erika James’s unique horror film, Relic. Thanks to the ticketing company, Filmbot, there will be re-releases of the aforementioned movies in theaters in Santa Ana, California, Brooklyn, New York, Columbus, Ohio and Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania during the weekend of December 12th to the 14th. Also on the slate are The Painter and the Thief, a documentary, the animated Wolfwalkers and The Wild Goose Lake from filmmaker Diao Yinan.

Sean Baker’s dark comedy, Red Rocket, was supposed to be an Oscar-worthy film for the director back in 2021, but A24 struggled with the film’s theatrical release due to the fact that many adult audiences were staying home on account of the pandemic. This film focuses on a middle-aged male who was a former porn star (played by Simon Rex) who begins a torrid affair with a young local woman (Suzanna Son) while living with his ex and her family. Rex’s character plans to use Son’s character for sex, but he then realizes he may have gotten in way over his head. This movie was a powerful examination of an affair gone wrong that pulled out all the stops and proves why Baker is such a force to contend with as a filmmaker.

Neon’s Pig was hailed as one of the ten best films of 2021 by us here at FilmBook. Nicolas Cage portrayed a loner who is forced to go to the big city when his friend, a pig, is kidnapped. This movie leads the audience on a discovery where Cage’s character confronts his past and his present while trying to find out what happened to the only true companion who he ever felt comfortable with – the pig. This was an action-packed drama with Cage at his best. It is a movie that, like Red Rocket, deserves to be seen on the big screen as it was originally intended to be seen.

First Cow and Relic are also critically acclaimed gems as well that were made by cinematic geniuses and will appeal to specialty audiences who should certainly seek them out when the COVID series is in effect in mid-December. This series will give the art house audience a chance to discover or re-discover movies that seemed to have gotten lost in the shuffle, no thanks to the pandemic. The fact that Pig and Red Rocket received no major Oscar nominations is evidence that they were truly under-seen because both pictures were deserving of awards consideration, especially Nicolas Cage for Best Actor for Pig and Suzanna Son for Best Supporting Actress for Red Rocket. Both of these films also had stellar screenplays as well.
