The Gotham Awards’ 2024 Nominations Should Help Boost Mikey Madison, ANORA and Other Oscar Hopefuls

Gotham Nominations to Help Anora and Other Contenders
Mikey Madison was nominated for Best Outstanding Lead Performance for her work in Anora by the Gotham Awards which should help her chances in regard to her potential path to Oscar glory.
2024 may be one of the toughest years for an actress to ultimately get an Oscar nomination in the leading actress category. Mikey Madison just got a major boost, though. Thanks to the overwhelming response to Anora from the Gotham award nominations, Anora has become the current front-runner in the Best Picture, Best Actress and Best Director (Sean Baker) categories at next year’s Oscars.
Nicole Kidman didn’t do too bad, herself. Kidman got a Gotham nomination in the Best Outstanding Lead Performance category for her work in the upcoming, Babygirl. That presumably disturbing, but most likely very interesting, feature film and Nickel Boys are the only two real competitors for Anora in the Best Feature category.
The Gotham awards also picked some key heavy hitters for nominations although, on second thought, the only movie that seems likely to genuinely challenge Anora for Best Feature is Nickel Boys. That film, directed by Gotham awards nominee, RaMell Ross, won accolades at this year’s New York Film Festival. The new Mikey Madison drama, Anora, has a lot more positive film-goer feedback to back it up at the present time than Nickel Boys does but that could all change very soon as Nickel Boys has not officially come out yet.
Also at the Gotham awards, Colman Domingo made the cut for Outstanding Lead Performance for his top-notch work in Sing Sing which was a release from the summer of 2024. Nicole Kidman (Babygirl), Adrien Brody (The Brutalist) and Saoirse Ronan (The Outrun) are the other front-runners in the Lead category who will give Anora‘s Mikey Madison a run for her money.
I Saw the TV Glow, which was released earlier this year, has just positioned itself as an Oscar hopeful after apparently getting a lack of full exposure in the movie theaters earlier this year. It received two Gotham nods, including one for Best Director (Jane Schoenbrun). Demi Moore got her Academy Award nomination-worthy role in The Substance into the pack of Gotham nominees and appears on the list of Gotham’s Outstanding Lead Performance nominees as well.
Saoirse Ronan (The Outrun) is also likely to be going into the Academy Awards race against Mikey Madison and Angelina Jolie (Maria) for the Best Actress Oscar. Jolie missed out on a nod from the Gotham awards for her recent turn, however, due to its ineligibility. Ronan sealed the fact that she’s a force to contend with in her Gotham-nominated performance in her previously mentioned new film.
Despite the presence of Natasha Lyonne (His Three Daughters, which also got a screenplay nod) and Kieran Culkan (A Real Pain) in the supporting performer nominees’ category, that award should certainly go to Guy Pearce for his stunning work in The Brutalist. That’s pretty much a guarantee. Felicity Jones was sadly snubbed for her riveting turn in The Brutalist.
Challengers and A Different Man also made the cut as Best Feature nominees alongside probable winner, Anora. Nickel Boys and Babygirl rounded out the top 5, as previously stated. The Brutalist was shockingly snubbed in that respective Best Feature category.
