Macaulay Culkin Believes DIE HARD is Actually Not a Christmas Movie
Macaulay Culkin Says Die Hard is Not a Christmas Movie
Die Hard may be a Christmas movie, according to folks like Zooey Deschanel, but not in the eyes of Home Alone star, Macaulay Culkin.
Don’t tell Macaulay Culkin that Die Hard is a Christmas movie because he’ll set the record straight. He believes that Die Hard could have been set during St. Patrick’s Day, for example, with just about the same results whereas setting Home Alone during Memorial Day would absolutely not fly, according to Culkin. Former child actor, Culkin, doesn’t want people to fight him on these arguments. You may, however, be able to make the case for or against Die Hard being a Christmas movie with equal levels of success.
Die Hard is an action picture from 1988 that took place on Christmas Eve and surrounded a group of terrorists which went face-to-face with a heroic cop played by Bruce Willis. Alan Rickman starred as the key heavy villain in the hugely successful film which spawned sequels and much acclaim from critics and audiences alike. It helped propel Willis’s film career as an action hero.
Filmmaker Chris Columbus recently said that Home Alone should not get another sequel or remake. 35 years after the original made a fortune in theaters, it doesn’t seem like recapturing the magic of that beloved classic or its first sequel would be possible nowadays.
Culkin still has an idea for a Home Alone spinoff where his character, Kevin McCallister, would be a widower who neglects his child or something like that and he would get locked out of his home by his kid who would set traps to prevent him from coming in the house. While that sounds cute in theory, it probably wouldn’t come close to capturing the magic Home Alone did for mainstream audiences back in 1990 despite receiving two thumbs down from Siskel & Ebert.
Willis became an action hero as a result of starring in Die Hard, but Culkin might be onto something when he says that it didn’t have to be set during Christmastime to be a successful film whereas Home Alone did. Still, Die Hard was, indeed, set on Christmas Eve, so we need to take that into account when considering whether or not it is actually a Christmas movie. Zooey Deschanel of Elf fame and thousands of fans do believe Die Hard is a Christmas movie so, Macaulay, lets agree to disagree for now. OK?
For a kind of subjective take on the situation, we could consider the film’s release date. Die Hard was released in the heat of the summer movie season in the late 1980’s whereas Home Alone was released around Thanksgiving in the early 1990’s. If the filmmakers intended Die Hard to be a “Christmas” movie, why didn’t they release it close to or around Christmas? Food for thought.
