Marcel the Shell With Shoes On Qualifies For Best Animated Feature

This past summer’s gem, Marcel the Shell With Shoes On will be eligible for consideration for Best Animated Feature at the upcoming Academy Awards ceremony in 2023.

In late June, A24 Films sneaked a terrifically entertaining little movie out into the crowded summer movie slate. It’s with great happiness that I’m to report that the movie, Marcel the Shell With Shoes On, was not forgotten and will now be eligible for consideration in the Best Animated Feature Film category at the Oscars.

Although the aforementioned A24 movie features some live-action, the stop-motion animation of the main character, Marcel who was voiced by Jenny Slate qualifies the film for the Animated Feature category. It’s a tremendously intriguing work that will be a tearjerker for many viewers. The movie, which was directed by Dean Fleischer-Camp, made $6 million domestically and although it is definitely a film for acquired taste, those who are open to the film’s cute premise will absolutely adore it. That makes it a strong contender to make the final cut for an Oscar nomination in its category.

Meanwhile, it was also announced that an animated Canadian documentary called Eternal Spring will also be eligible for the same category. In addition, Richard Linklater’s creative Netflix film titled Apollo 10 1/2: A Space Age Childhood can also be considered as a prospect for a Best Animated Film nomination at the 95th Academy Awards.

However, it is the mockumentary Marcel the Shell With Shoes On which is the real gem in the pack. Legendary actress Isabella Rossellini played the voice of the grandmother in the animated movie and this was one of the most touching non-human characters to grace the silver screen recently. When I reviewed Marcel the Shell With Shoes On, I hinted to the potential the film possessed for Academy Award consideration because it reminded me of a movie from 1995 called Babe which was the surprise underdog at the Oscar nominations way back then. I felt Babe vibes with Marcel the Shell With Shoes On.

It will be the highlight of the day for fans of Marcel the Shell With Shoes On to know that the picture is going to be eligible for consideration in the category it belongs to participate in at the next Oscars ceremony which will be hosted by Jimmy Kimmel. Let’s hope the A24 “little movie that could” makes the final cut and does, indeed, secure a nod for Best Animated Feature Film. If a little pig named Babe could get into the Academy Award race for Best Picture, a thought-provoking little shell named Marcel should certainly get a Best Animated Feature nod.
