The significant focus of Mike Markoff’s career has been on television.

His lead in his better known romance mystery on Lifetime, Temptation Under the Sun, allows a glimpse into his ability to evoke some character depth from a very passable fluff project. But dependability seems to be a cornerstone of his career as well. With nearly a dozen projects either filming or in post-production, Markoff has proven his reliability beyond doubt. In addition, some of these works involve a production company, New Rebellion Entertainment, in which he holds an executive spot.

Markoff’s recent performance in Pursuit of Freedom indicates a good call for his casting in Hitman. Pursuit of Freedom is an inspirational movie based on the true story of a Ukrainian mother, in the face of terminal cancer, struggles to reunite with her children, victims of a Russian human trafficking ring. Markoff portrays Razmig, a hot-headed lackey for the gangsters, and quite a dynamic performance it is.

Richard Linklater’s consistently remarkable work can fairly be said to be driven by the characters, as often as not, the quirkier, the better. Often these projects are centered on tangential ensemble performances and plot almost subtext, particularly in his earlier works. Slacker and Dazed and Confused are good examples.

Journalist Skip Hollandsworth joins Linklater (who is co-writing) for a second time. The journalist is basing the Hitman screenplay on an article he penned for “Texas Monthly,” where he is an executive editor. He teamed up with Linklater in 2011, writing the script for the extraordinary sleeper Bernie. This film expanded on his true crime reportage, delving deep into the murder of millionaire and small town crank Marjorie Nugent by her friend Bernie Tiede, more than 40 years her junior. The film is acclaimed in large part because of the performances in general, with actual townspeople among them, but particularly Jack Black in the title role.

It seems likely enough that Markoff is a wise choice because of his robust portrayal of a character in a real life crime drama. He joins fellow cast members Adria Arjona, Austin Amelio, Retta, Molly Bernard, Ritchie Montgomery, Jordan Salloum, Anthony Michael Frederick, and Sanjay Rao. Glen Powell has been cast as the male lead, Gary Johnson, who is also producing. The team of producers round out with John Sloss (Green Book) as executive producer, Jason Bateman, Mike Blizzard, Michael Costigan, Richard Linklater, and Skip Hollandsworth.

Hitman is currently filming in New Orleans, with no release date given and VVS Films set to distribute.
