National Treasure 3 in the Works for Release in Theaters

Jerry Bruckheimer has stated that a third National Treasure movie is in development which would be positioned as a theatrical release.

The existence of the current Disney Plus show, “National Treasure: Edge of History” doesn’t mean that a third National Treasure movie that would be released in theaters is out of the question. On the contrary. It was recently revealed that a script is going to be sent to Nicolas Cage to see if he likes it and will come on board the project. That news may be a surprise to Cage who recently thought that the idea of a third film in the franchise was not going to happen.

National Treasure from 2004 and National Treasure: Book of Secrets from 2007 were both hugely successful with audiences with each of these films receiving an “A-” grade from CinemaScore audiences back when they were released. The original 2004 movie earned an astonishing $173 million in its initial release domestically and another $174 million internationally. The 2007 film made $219 million domestically and $239 million more overseas. Yet, it’s taken 15 years for a third movie in the series to come into consideration.

Many fans of these action movies (which were in the vein of the Indiana Jones pictures) may have thought a third National Treasure movie was dead in the water but Bruckheimer has revealed that is not the case. Nicolas Cage has made a quiet comeback these days with two back-to-back hits in last year’s dramatic film, Pig, and this year’s comedy spoof of sorts, The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent. It seems like now is the perfect time to bring back the action hero Cage was known to be starting in the late 1990’s with movies like Con Air and Face/Off.

While waiting for National Treasure 3 to go into production, you can check out “National Treasure: Edge of History” now on Disney Plus. That show is introducing some of the movies’ themes to a whole new generation of potential moviegoers who may just turn up in droves when the third theatrical movie eventually comes out.

Anyone who knows the series of films from the 2000’s knows the basic formula for these types of shows/movies but the fun is all in watching the characters in action as they learn a bit about the past as the events around them gets exciting and intense. If you haven’t seen these movies or the current show, now is as good a time as any to familiarize yourself with them as Cage soon considers the script for the third movie which he will hopefully be a part of.
