Nicole Kidman Chosen to Receive AFI Life Achievement Award

Oscar-winning actress Nicole Kidman has been selected to be honored with a Life Achievement Award from AFI.

Nicole Kidman simply makes movies better. The American Film Institute has now chosen Kidman to receive the 49th AFI Life Achievement Award to be given to the actress on June 10, 2023. Last year, the performer wowed film critics and audiences alike with her Oscar-nominated work as Lucille Ball in Being the Ricardos. She’s had a career full of excellent performances, though. Most noteworthy from an acting standpoint was her turn as writer Virginia Woolf, the role that won her the Academy Award for Best Actress for the riveting 2002 film, The Hours.

At one point early in her career, Kidman was married to Tom Cruise (the two starred together in the summer movie from 1990, Days of Thunder) which launched her into the spotlight, but it was soon revealed that she could act on her own merits even without being associated with Cruise. When Kidman was in the 1995 Gus Van Sant movie, To Die For, she won plenty of critical accolades. That acclaim didn’t stop the actress from eventually appearing together with Cruise again in Stanley Kubricks’s masterpiece, Eyes Wide Shut back in 1999. However, the couple’s marriage didn’t last too long after that controversial film’s release.

Kidman was nominated for the Oscar for Best Actress even before she won for The Hours. She was up for an Academy Award for 2001’s terrific movie musical, Moulin Rouge! which cemented Kidman’s status as one of the most successful actresses working in Hollywood. Recently, she has been seen in the wonderfully well-received AMC Theatres commercial that precedes movies that are shown at the popular movie theatre chain. Kidman adds a touch of class to the movie-going experience in that phenomenal advertisement which has been so popular it has even been spoofed by comedy shows.

In addition to appearing in box-office hits like Aquaman, Kidman has also played high-profile parts in independent movies like Lars von Trier’s Dogville from 2004. She selects quality roles and was also recently seen in the critically well-received movie, The Northman. When the theatre lights dim, and Kidman’s in a movie, you know you’re in for a high-quality motion picture.

The AFI award will be given to Kidman at a gala event at Hollywood’s Dolby Theatre. She is the first Australian performer to receive the prestigious honor. It is certainly a well-deserved accomplishment for an artist of incredible range as a performer. Kidman probably won’t be retiring any time soon, though. Recently, she has made appearances on big TV event shows and an occasional mini-series or two. Such titles include “Big Little Lies” and “The Undoing.”
