Actor and comedian Adam Pally joins the team of O Horizon, which wrapped in the autumn of 2022. The spare but equally distinguished cast also includes Maria Bakalova, David Strathairn, and Winslow Bright.

This film is a triple-header, a mix of science fiction, drama, and comedy. The synopsis given so far is both concise and relatively straightforward. At the center is Abby, a gifted neuroscientist who uses her career to bury the grief over her recently deceased father, Warren (Strathairn), as might be expected, but not so much from loss of a loved one as peace of mind. But then along comes a computer whiz (Pally) whose program can provide a virtual dad — an interactive Warren with whom she now has the opportunity for much needed closure. As part of Abby’s research, the monkey Dorey — presumably a chimpanzee or rhesus — no doubt also has some part to play in her revelations.

The unknown quantity is who penned this movie, as no particular writing credit is given. Logical deduction points to collaboration; this would make the most sense in a hybrid project such as this. All of the members could bring their own expertise to the table. Adam Pally, for instance, for the facet of comedy and sense of improv, is a perfect choice beyond that of performing. David Strathairn is . . . well, his C. V. speaks for itself. His roles are legion as a sort of Pater familias. Whether profound, petulant, or patronizing, he is bound to make a remarkable digitized Warren.

Ms. Bakalova’s Academy nomination for Borat Subsequent Moviefilm brought international attention to this hard-working performer. But she was no stranger to prominent roles before that in her native Bulgaria. She took an award in Toronto for her work in Transgression. Later she garnered acclaim as a suicidal young woman in Last Call. Then in 2022, she turned to comedies: Bodies, Bodies Bodies, The Honeymoon, and The Bubble, directed by Judd Apatow.

Though Madeleine Sackler’s obvious filmmaking talent has been obscured by scandal, she has managed to soldier on, trying her best to concentrate on honing her craft. And it’s paid off, starting with a timely, pro charter school documentary, The Lottery, short-listed for an Academy Award. Her later documentary, Dangerous Acts Starring the Unstable Elements of Belarus, took an Emmy. Despite some detraction, her narrative feature, O.G., still earned plenty of praise. With all that gravitas behind her, O Horizon might be a refreshing challenge for Ms. Sackler.

Currently O Horizon is in post-production, and no release date is yet available.
