PRACTICAL MAGIC 2: Nicole Kidman and Sandra Bullock Set to Return For Sequel to 1998’s Witch Comedy

Kidman and Bullock Could Be Reprising Their Sisterly Witch Roles
Nicole Kidman and Sandra Bullock will be returning to the screen with a sequel to 1998’s moderate box-office success, Practical Magic.
In 1998, Alice Hoffman’s book, Practical Magic, inspired a dark comedy film that starred Nicole Kidman, Sandra Bullock, Aidan Quinn, Stockard Channing and Dianne Wiest. It was directed by a man, Griffin Dunne, but, now, a woman could possibly get behind the camera to helm a sequel to that mild box-office success. Despite scathing reviews and a mere “B-” CinemaScore grade, the 1998 film, Practical Magic, went on to be a cult favorite as the concept of sisterly female witches (complete with regular midnight margaritas) seemed to resonate with certain viewers throughout the years. Akiva Goldsman will be penning the script while Kidman and Bullock will co-produce.
The Owens family in the original film had a stroke of bad luck with men but by the time the movie ended, Bullock’s character found love with a cop (played by Aidan Quinn) with one green eye and one blue eye just like she had wished for. It was a happily-ever-after fairy tale. And, the tale has garnered more fans with age. 26 years have passed since the original film came out for Halloween season, 1998. It made $46 million back then which was OK considering many believed it was a seasonal film that really was only playable for the weeks preceding Halloween.
There are a lot of things about the 1998 film that stood out then and still do now. For one, the soundtrack was out-of-this-world. Alan Silvestri’s musical score was merrily easy to walk out of the theater humming while songs that included titles from Faith Hill (“This Kiss”) and Stevie Nicks (“Crystal”) were also quite memorable. Also, who could forget the sweet romance between Bullock’s character and her love interest played by Quinn? There is talk that the new follow-up sequel film is in the works but it is unclear whether it’s for theaters or for MAX.
It would be nice to see Channing and Wiest back at work as well as the older and wiser aunt witches if they return in the sequel. No other real news was revealed regarding the specifics of the story line that would be showcased in Practical Magic 2. Bullock and Kidman have gone on to win Best Actress Oscars but have hit a speed bump in their movie careers. Kidman is most talked about for her AMC Theaters commercial these days rather than for her film performances while Bullock could certainly use another hit to re-establish her one-time reign at the box-office. Practical Magic 2 could cast the spell these actresses need to be back in the limelight again.
