A prolific production two-fer dropped today in the film world. Keep on reading to find out about genre-based production deals being made stateside and across the pond.

Comet and Blumhouse

Jamie Lee Curtis, the actor, director, and Scream Queen extraordinaire, has inked a three-year first-look deal with Blumhouse Productions. The deal will cover potential projects in both film and television.

Curtis and her Comet Pictures banner recently teamed up with Jason Blum’s label on 2018’s Halloween in which she reprised her iconic role as Laurie Strode. The film, while garnering a mixed to positive response, still grossed $255 million worldwide on a $15 million budget.

“I’m excited to have a creative home to explore my own ideas and others,” Curtis said. “Jason and his team have made me feel welcome. Comet is ready to bring these stories to screen life.”

The first film under the deal will be the eco-horror film Mother Nature, which Curtis will direct from a screenplay co-written by Russell Goldman. No cast nor production dates have been announced yet, but it’s purportedly surrounding the effects of catastrophic climate change. This will also serve as Curtis’ first theatrical-bound directorial effort (she’s directed television films and episodes in the past).

“Jamie is a force of nature and was a real partner on Halloween,” said Blum. “So it’s both an honor and incredibly apt that she’s making her first feature film as a director with Mother Nature.”

Complete Fiction

Edgar Wright has teamed with Nira Park, Joe Cornish, and Rachael Prior to launch a new production company entitled Complete Fiction. The company will have locations in both Los Angeles and London, producing content for film and television with an aggressive expansion into the latter.

Park has a long history of producing for both film and television. She has worked on every one of Wright’s projects all the way back to his Spaced days, and also produced Cornish’s two directorial efforts Attack the Block and The Kid Who Would Be King. Cornish has collaborated with Wright on writing efforts from The Adventures of Tintin to the original Ant-Man screenplay. And Prior has started moving into producing herself, after spending much of the past decade working as Head of Development for Park’s Big Talk Productions.

“A huge motivating factor in forming this new company is the chance to work with the writers and directors that inspire us across all mediums,” said Park. “We feel very lucky to have each other, and this new company is an expression of our ambitions for the next phase of our careers, and a desire to do that together as a working family.”

“Nira has been my producer now for more than 20 years, but we, along with our amazing team of long-time friends and collaborators, still share the same drive to bring original stories to the screen,” Wright added. “I’ve been lucky enough to always have this team around me who have advocated for my voice and vision as a filmmaker, and I’m excited to bring new stories into the world and be part of making that happen for the next generation.”

Complete Fiction currently has three series in development with Netflix: a supernatural detective series Lockwood & Co., a sci-fi horror The Murders of Molly Southbourne, and a historical fantasy The City of Brass, from author S.A. Chakraborty’s Daevabad trilogy. The company is also in post-production on Wright’s upcoming feature Last Night in Soho, whose September release was delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
