Kathryn Newton To Re-Team with Radio Silence

Kathryn Newton has joined the cast of the eagerly awaited horror movie sequel, Ready or Not 2.

Samara Weaving and Kathryn Newton will both be toplining the upcoming horror sequel to 2019’s surprise hit, Ready or Not. This casting news came as a welcome surprise for horror movie fans who have been watching Newton recently in several high-profile projects, including Freaky, Lisa Frankenstein and Abigail. Ready or Not left audiences in suspense with its shocking ending and it will be fun to see how the plot will develop with the recently cast Newton featured alongside Weaving whose character survived quite an ordeal at the end of the original movie.

Searchlight’s Ready or Not sequel could do equally as well as the first film. Though Newton is not a huge box-office draw as of yet, she has amassed a large number of fans thanks to the horror movie niche she has carved out for herself these days. Also, the directors of Ready or Not 2, Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett (known collectively as Radio Silence), already worked with Newton on last year’s hit, Abigail, so something tells me they’re about to spin the Ready or Not franchise on its head with this latest endeavor. That’s because of the combined talents of the stars, Weaving and Newton, who will certainly add some undeniable intensity to the sequel. Specifics of the plot, however, are not available at this present time.

Whereas the first Ready or Not featured a story about a woman’s fight for survival against the backdrop of a large home, it is uncertain if the new film will follow the same basic structure as the original picture. Newton is just as good at comedy as she is with horror which leads one to suspect the upcoming sequel could have more humor than the first film did.

Newton appeared in the very funny Blockers with Leslie Mann and John Cena, but she also has a movie with a blockbuster budget on her resume with the last Ant-Man film from Marvel. Newton shone in her role in the box-office flop, Lisa Frankenstein, as a troubled young woman who fell in love with a living corpse and, before that, she played with Vince Vaughn in the well-received body swap horror film, Freaky. Abigail only made $25 million domestically but proved to be a well-received horror picture that, like the original Ready or Not, was confined to a single setting for most of the movie.

Can this new Ready or Not sequel top the $28 million the first film made at the domestic box-office? With Newton as the first co-star joining Weaving, the announcement of the rest of the film’s cast will help determine its ultimate box-office prospects.
