THE ELEPHANT MAN: Adam Pearson Slated to Portray Joseph Merrick in Upcoming Film

Adam Pearson To Play in New Version of The Elephant Man
Adam Pearson has been selected to star in an upcoming film remake of the dramatic play, The Elephant Man.
Adam Pearson, the actor who wowed viewers with his supporting turn in last year’s A Different Man, will be stepping into the role of Joseph Merrick in a new film adaptation of Bernard Pomerance’s play, The Elephant Man. While actual filming of the latest project is expected to begin in spring of 2026, that gives audiences time to check out the 1980 original movie of the same name which was directed by David Lynch and starred John Hurt and Anthony Hopkins, not to mention Anne Bancroft and Sir John Gielgud. It told the story of a disfigured man, Joseph Merrick (Hurt), and his successes and tribulations before his death at a young age. That film was an independent production from the play and featured a different story line from the play.
Bernard Pomerance’s son, Moby, will be penning the script for the new upcoming film. This picture’s story could be closer to the original play in scope and will likely also be centered around the diaries of Merrick’s doctor, Frederick Treves, regarding his work with Merrick who, himself, inspired many through his existence.
Pearson, who also suffers from a real-life physical disfigurement, will be the first disabled actor to portray Merrick. Pearson appears to have been inspired by Merrick’s story which has fascinated the actor through later stages in his life. Merrick has been portrayed by actors such as Bradley Cooper, David Bowie, Mark Hamill and Billy Crudup, but this performance by Pearson may be the most powerful one of all given the actor’s real-life disability and accomplishments which make him an inspirational performer of our times.
Eve Pomerance, the daughter of the playwright, is also excited about seeing Pearson in the role of Merrick. It will give the story much more meaning and significance to see a real-disabled actor in the role and Eve Pomerance is happy to be honoring her dad’s original work.
A Different Man, with Pearson, won many awards and was deemed the best feature film of 2024 by the Gotham awards for last year. It was just one of many accolades the movie received which included mostly positive reviews as the film stands at a 93% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
Though the 1980 film is different from the play the new film is based on, it still is a good way to familiarize oneself with the basic story of Merrick’s life. Lynch’s film was simply a masterpiece on its own merits and is now 45 years old. It was one of John Hurt’s greatest roles and seeing Pearson in the next film version of the material will be simply an amazing experience considering the actor’s real-life similarities to the character he will be portraying.
